Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A shaftless rotary machine includes an impeller, a motor positioned radially outward from the impeller, and a housing. The impeller includes a hub, blades connected to the hub, and a shroud connected to the blades. The motor includes a rotor connected to the shroud and a stator. The housing includes an inlet, an outlet, and a duct. The duct extends from the inlet to the outlet. The duct partially surrounds the motor and the impeller.

The invention claimed is: 1. A shaftless rotary machine comprising: an impeller comprising: a center axis, wherein the impeller is configured to rotate around the center axis; a radially outer side of the impeller, wherein the radially outer side of the impeller is an exit of the impeller; a hub; blades connected to the hub; and a shroud connected to the blades; a motor positioned radially outward from the impeller, the motor comprising: a rotor connected to the shroud; and a stator; a housing having an inlet, an outlet, and a duct extending from the inlet to the outlet, wherein the duct partially surrounds the motor and the impeller; and a bypass flow path extending between the stator and the rotor, the bypass flow path comprising an entrance and an exit, the entrance of the bypass flow path is disposed radially outward from the radially outer side of the impeller relative to the center axis, and the exit of the bypass flow path is disposed axially between the rotor and the inlet relative to the center axis, wherein the bypass flow path comprises only a single turn between the entrance of the bypass flow path and the exit of the bypass flow path, and the exit of the bypass flow path is fluidically connected to the inlet, and wherein the shaftless rotary machine does not comprise a shaft. 2. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the stator is connected to the housing. 3. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 2 , wherein a radially inner side of the rotor is connected to the impeller shroud, wherein a radially outer side of the stator is connected to the housing, and wherein a radially inner surface of the stator is oriented toward a radially outer surface of the rotor. 4. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the impeller and the rotor are integrally formed. 5. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the impeller and the rotor are monolithically formed. 6. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , and further comprising: a thrust bearing between the impeller and a backing plate, wherein the backing plate is a rear portion of the housing; and a journal bearing between the hub and the backing plate. 7. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the duct is volute shaped. 8. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the hub is hollow. 9. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the hub has a lattice structure in a weight reduction area of the hub. 10. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises: an inlet housing surrounding the inlet; a motor housing connected to the inlet housing; a duct housing connected to the motor housing and positioned radially outward from the impeller and the motor; and an outlet housing extending from the duct housing. 11. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 10 , wherein the housing is integrally formed. 12. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 10 , and further comprising: a backing plate connected to the duct housing opposite the motor housing. 13. A shaftless rotary machine comprising: a housing having an inlet, an outlet, and a duct extending from the inlet to the outlet, the housing comprising: an inlet housing surrounding the inlet; a motor housing connected to the inlet housing; a duct housing connected to the motor housing, wherein the duct housing is volute shaped; and an outlet housing extending from the duct housing, wherein the outlet housing surrounds the outlet; wherein the housing is integrally formed; a motor positioned radially inward from the housing, the motor comprising: a stator connected to the housing; and a rotor; an impeller positioned radially inward from the motor, the impeller comprising: a center axis, wherein the impeller is configured to rotate around the center axis; a radially outer side of the impeller forming an exit of the impeller; a shroud, wherein the rotor is connected to a radially outer side of the shroud; blades connected to a radially inner surface of the shroud; and a hub connected to the blades; wherein the impeller and the rotor are monolithically formed; and a bypass flow path extending between the stator and the rotor, the bypass flow path comprising an entrance and an exit, the entrance of the bypass flow path is disposed radially outward from the radially outer side of the impeller relative to the center axis, and the exit of the bypass flow path is disposed axially between the rotor the and the inlet, relative to the center axis, wherein the bypass flow path comprises only a single turn between the entrance of the bypass flow path and the exit of the bypass flow path, and the exit of the bypass flow path is fluidically connected to the inlet, wherein the duct partially surrounds the motor and the impeller, and the duct housing is positioned radially outward from the impeller and the motor. 14. The shaftless rotary machine of claim 1 , wherein the entrance of the bypass flow path is orthogonal to the exit of the impeller.
