Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cartridge for use with an aerosol-generating system has a housing defining a liquid containing volume. The housing includes a sidewall extending from a mouthpiece end to a power supply end. The housing includes a transparent region forming at least a portion of the sidewall. The housing includes a light source fixed to the sidewall. The light source is configured to transmit light into the liquid containing volume. The light source may be fixed to an inner surface of the sidewall, fixed to an outer surface of the sidewall, or form a portion or the sidewall.

We claim: 1. A cartridge for use with an aerosol-generating system, the cartridge comprising: a housing defining a cavity, the cavity configured to receive an atomizer, the housing including a transparent region and a recess in a sidewall of the housing; a liquid storage portion defined between the housing and the cavity; a light source on an outer surface of the housing and within the recess, the light source configured to transmit light into the liquid storage portion; and a cover over the recess, the light source between the outer surface of the housing and the cover. 2. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall extends from a mouthpiece end to a power supply end of the housing. 3. The cartridge of claim 2 , further comprising: an electrical interface electrically connected to the light source and coupled to the sidewall. 4. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the light source transmits light through the transparent region. 5. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein a portion of an inner surface of the housing includes a light reflective layer. 6. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the transparent region comprises an anti-reflective coating. 7. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a solid-state light source. 8. The cartridge of claim 7 , wherein the solid-state light source is a light emitting diode. 9. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a radioluminescence material. 10. The cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the radioluminescence material comprises radium, promethium, tritium, a sub-combination thereof, or any combination thereof. 11. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the light source emits light wavelengths in a range from 420 to 720 nm. 12. An aerosol-generating system comprising, a power supply; an atomizer electrically coupled to the power supply; and a cartridge including, a housing defining a cavity, the cavity configured to receive the atomizer, the housing including a transparent region and a recess in a sidewall of the housing, a liquid storage portion defined between the housing and the cavity, a light source on an outer surface of the housing and within the recess, the light source configured to transmit light into the liquid storage portion, and a cover over the recess, the light source between the outer surface of the housing and the cover. 13. The aerosol-generating system of claim 12 , wherein the power supply comprises a complementary electrical interface electrically coupled to an electrical interface of the light source. 14. The aerosol-generating system of claim 12 , further comprising: a control circuit coupled to the light source, the control circuit configured to illuminate the light source independently from activating the atomizer. 15. The aerosol-generating system of claim 12 , further comprising: a light sensor coupled to the light source. 16. The aerosol-generating system of claim 12 , further comprising: a puff sensor coupled to the light source; and a controller coupled to the puff sensor and the light source; wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the light source in response to the puff sensor detecting inhalation and activate the light source in response to the puff sensor detecting an end of inhalation.
