Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A recording apparatus includes a wiper, a recording head having a step portion and an ejection port surface supporting an ejection port, and a moving unit to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the wiper moves with respect to the recording head in relative movement in a first direction. In a first wiping, the relative movement causes the wiper to stop at or in vicinity of the step portion, or pass at or in the vicinity of the step portion at a speed lower than a speed at which the wiper wipes an area in which the ejection port is arranged. In a second wiping performed after the first wiping, the relative movement causes the wiper to pass through the step portion of the recording head and wipe the recording head in the first direction toward the area, and thereafter wipe the area.

What is claimed is: 1. A recording apparatus comprising: a recording head having an ejection port surface and a step portion, wherein an ejection port configured to eject ink is arranged on the ejection port surface and the step portion (i) is at a position different from an area in which the ejection port is arranged on the ejection port surface side and (ii) is formed of at least one of a raised portion that is raised with respect to the ejection port surface or a recessed portion that is recessed with respect to the ejection port surface; a wiper configured to wipe the ejection port surface; and a moving unit configured to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the wiper moves with respect to the recording head in a first direction along the ejection port surface, wherein, in a first wiping, the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit causes the wiper to pass in a vicinity of the step portion at a speed that is lower than a speed at which the wiper wipes the area in which the ejection port is arranged such that ink accumulated in the step portion is removed from the step portion, and wherein, in a second wiping performed after the first wiping, the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit causes the wiper to be past the step portion of the recording head and wipe the recording head in the first direction toward the area in which the ejection port is arranged, and thereafter wipe the area in which the ejection port is arranged. 2. The recording apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the moving unit is configured to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the wiper wipes the ejection port surface multiple times. 3. The recording apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising a change unit configured to change a distance, in a direction perpendicular to the ejection port surface, between a portion of the wiper that comes into contact with the ejection port surface and the ejection port surface before the wiper wipes the ejection port surface, wherein the moving unit is configured to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the distance between the portion of the wiper that comes into contact with the ejection port surface and the ejection port surface is changed by the change unit and the wiper wipes the ejection port surface multiple times. 4. The recording apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the moving unit is configured to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the wiper wipes the ejection port surface multiple times while changing a stop position of the wiper. 5. The recording apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first wiping as part of passing in the vicinity of the step portion, the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit causes the wiper to stop in the vicinity of the step portion at a position sufficient for ink accumulated in the step portion to be removed from the step portion by falling along the wiper. 6. The recording apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first wiping as part of passing in the vicinity of the step portion, the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit causes the wiper to stop in the vicinity of the step portion for an amount of time sufficient for ink accumulated in the step portion to be removed from the step portion by falling along the wiper. 7. The recording apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein, in falling along the wiper, ink from the step portion falls down to portions of the wiper other than portions where the wiper is in contact with the ejection port surface. 8. The recording apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the step portion is formed during a process of manufacturing the recording head that includes: providing the recording head with a chip recessed portion that is larger than a chip provided with the ejection port, and attaching the chip provided with the ejection port in the chip recessed portion to form a gap that serves as the step portion having a possibility for entry of ink into the step portion. 9. A wiping method for a recording apparatus, wherein the recording apparatus includes a recording head having an ejection port surface and a step portion, wherein an ejection port configured to eject ink is arranged on the ejection port surface and the step portion (i) is at a position different from an area in which the ejection port is arranged on the ejection port surface side and (ii) is formed of at least one of a raised portion that is raised with respect to the ejection port surface or a recessed portion that is recessed with respect to the ejection port surface, wherein the recording apparatus further includes a wiper configured to wipe the ejection port surface, and a moving unit, the method comprising: relatively moving the wiper and the recording head via the moving unit so that the wiper moves with respect to the recording head in a first direction along the ejection port surface; causing, in a first wiping by the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit, the wiper to pass in a vicinity of the step portion at a speed that is lower than a speed at which the wiper wipes the area in which the ejection port is arranged such that ink accumulated in the step portion is removed from the step portion; and causing, in a second wiping, performed after the first wiping, by the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit, the wiper to be past the step portion of the recording head and wipe the recording head in the first direction toward the area in which the ejection port is arranged, and thereafter wipe the area in which the ejection port is arranged. 10. A recording apparatus comprising: a recording head having an ejection port surface and a step portion, wherein an ejection port configured to eject ink is arranged on the ejection port surface and the step portion (i) is at a position different from an area in which the ejection port is arranged on the ejection port surface side and (ii) is formed of at least one of a raised portion that is raised with respect to the ejection port surface or a recessed portion that is recessed with respect to the ejection port surface; a wiper configured to wipe the ejection port surface; and a moving unit configured to relatively move the wiper and the recording head so that the wiper moves with respect to the recording head in a first direction along the ejection port surface, wherein, in a first wiping to reduce ink accumulated in the step portion, the wiper is moved to an accumulated ink removal position and a velocity of the wiper is changed during the move to the accumulated ink removal position so that, on the wiper reaching the accumulated ink removal position, ink accumulated in the step portion has access to the wiper and time during that access that is sufficient to be extracted from the step portion and fall along the wiper to be removed from the step portion, and wherein, in a second wiping performed after the first wiping, the relative movement of the wiper and the recording head by the moving unit causes the wiper to be past the step portion of the recording head and wipe the recording head in the first direction toward the area in which the ejection port is arranged, and thereafter wipe the area in which the ejection port is arranged.
