Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present application discloses a mechanism to adjust backlash in a rack and pinion powertrain assembly. The mechanism to adjust backlash includes a mounting frame having an opening defined therein to receive an operative end of a drive assembly, a shoulder fastener positioned through a first complementary set of holes at a first end of a mounting flange to movably couple the mounting flange to the mounting frame, the fastener being fastened in a manner such that the mounting flange and drive assembly have freedom to pivot about a longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes, and an adjustable length coupling device having a first end coupled mechanically to the mounting plate and a second end coupled mechanically to the mounting flange at a location substantially opposite the first end of the mounting flange.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A mechanism to adjust backlash in a rack and pinion powertrain assembly, comprising: a mounting frame having an opening defined therein to receive an operative end of a drive assembly, the operative end of the drive assembly having a power-driven pinion mounted on or near a distal end of the operative end of the drive assembly, the drive assembly including a mounting flange that is larger than the opening, and the mounting frame and mounting flange including complementary sets of holes each set including a hole in the mounting frame and a corresponding hole in the mounting flange; a shoulder fastener positioned through a first complementary set of holes at a first end of the mounting flange to movably couple the mounting flange to the mounting frame, the fastener being fastened in a manner such that the mounting flange and drive assembly have freedom to pivot about a longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes; and an adjustable length coupling device having a first end coupled mechanically to the mounting frame and a second end coupled mechanically to the mounting flange at a location substantially opposite the first end of the mounting flange, wherein the first end of the adjustable length coupling device is coupled to the mounting frame and the second end of the adjustable length coupling device is coupled to the mounting flange such that adjustment of the length of the coupling device causes the mounting flange and components of the drive assembly attached directly or indirectly to the mounting flange to rotate about said longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes resulting in a corresponding adjustment to the backlash of the rack and pinion powertrain assembly. 2. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable length coupling device is a turnbuckle. 3. The mechanism of claim 2 , wherein: the turnbuckle comprises: a turnbuckle body having a first end and a second end; and a threaded end fitting at each end; and turning the turnbuckle body in one direction brings end fittings closer together. 4. The mechanism of claim 3 , wherein turning the turnbuckle body in an opposite direction pushes end fittings further apart. 5. The mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the threaded end fitting is opposite handed. 6. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein a backlash adjustment adjusts a position of the pinion relative to a rack gear with which the pinion is configured to be engaged mechanically when the operative end of the drive assembly is passed through the opening in the mounting frame. 7. The mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the rack gear is included in a linear track along which the drive assembly is configured to translate. 8. The mechanism of claim 7 , wherein a robot is coupled to the drive assembly. 9. A system, comprising: a robotic arm mounted to a carriage; a guide mechanism comprising a rail; a carriage comprising a powertrain assembly that causes the robotic arm to traverse the rail when driven; and a backlash adjustment mechanism to adjust backlash in a rack and pinion powertrain assembly, the backlash adjustment mechanism comprising: a mounting frame having an opening defined therein to receive an operative end of a drive assembly, the operative end of the drive assembly having a power-driven pinion mounted on or near a distal end of the operative end of the drive assembly, the drive assembly including a mounting flange that is larger than the opening, and the mounting frame and mounting flange including complementary sets of holes each set including a hole in the mounting frame and a corresponding hole in the mounting flange; a shoulder fastener positioned through a first complementary set of holes at a first end of the mounting flange to movably couple the mounting flange to the mounting frame, the fastener being fastened in a manner such that the mounting flange and drive assembly have freedom to pivot about a longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes; and an adjustable length coupling device having a first end coupled mechanically to the mounting frame and a second end coupled mechanically to the mounting flange at a location substantially opposite the first end of the mounting flange, wherein the first end of the adjustable length coupling device is coupled to the mounting frame and the second end of the adjustable length coupling device is coupled to the mounting flange such that adjustment of the length of the coupling device causes the mounting flange and components of the drive assembly attached directly or indirectly to the mounting flange to rotate about said longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes resulting in a corresponding adjustment to the backlash of the rack and pinion powertrain assembly. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein: the guide mechanism comprises a plurality of rail segments; and one or more sets of two of the plurality of rail segments are coupled to an anchoring mechanism. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the anchoring mechanism comprises at least one leveling mechanism that is configured to be tuned to adjust a level between a corresponding set of two of the plurality of rail segments. 12. The system of claim 10 , wherein: the guide mechanism comprises a plurality of base plates; and the rail is mounted to a corresponding base plate of the plurality of baseplates. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein an alignment tool is used to align the rack, at least one set of two base plates of the plurality of base plates, and the at least one set of two of the plurality of rail segments. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the carriage comprises one or more wipers that remove particulate matter from the rail as the carriage traverses the rail. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the carriage comprises one or more lubrication ports that via which lubricant is introduced to a surface of the rail as the carriage traverses the rail. 16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the carriage comprises a side skirt that prevents debris from interfering with operation as the carriage traverses the rail. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the side skirt is magnetically mounted to the carriage. 18. The system of claim 9 , further comprising: one or more sensors; wherein: at least one of the one or more sensors is mounted on a structure that is mechanically coupled to the robotic arm or carriage on which the robotic arm is mounted. 19. A method for adjusting backlash in a rack and pinion powertrain assembly, the method comprising: using a backlash adjustment mechanism to adjust backlash in the rack and pinion powertrain assembly; wherein the backlash adjustment mechanism comprises: a mounting frame having an opening defined therein to receive an operative end of a drive assembly, the operative end of the drive assembly having a power-driven pinion mounted on or near a distal end of the operative end of the drive assembly, the drive assembly including a mounting flange that is larger than the opening, and the mounting frame and mounting flange including complementary sets of holes each set including a hole in the mounting frame and a corresponding hole in the mounting flange; a shoulder fastener positioned through a first complementary set of holes at a first end of the mounting flange to movably couple the mounting flange to the mounting frame, the fastener being fastened in a manner such that the mounting flange and drive assembly have freedom to pivot about a longitudinal axis of the first complementary set of holes;
