Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods for preventing contamination of an endoscope may include coupling a sheath device to cover both the inside and outside of the endoscope. The sheath device may include a rigidizing flexible tubular external sheath that extends over the endoscope to form an external protective barrier, a tubular internal sheath that extends within a lumen of the endoscope that forms an internal protective barrier, and a cap sealed to both the external sheath and the internal sheath. The sheath may be rigidized to enhance insertion.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of attaching a rigidizing external sheath to an endoscope, the method comprising: inserting an internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into a lumen of the endoscope, wherein the internal sheath extends from a distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath; sliding the rigidizing external sheath over the endoscope while applying a negative pressure within the rigidizing endoscope to enlarge the space between the rigidizing external sheath and the endoscope, so that the endoscope is within a lumen of the rigidizing external sheath and the internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath is within the lumen of the endoscope; engaging the distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath with a distal end region of the endoscope; and releasing the negative pressure once the endoscope is ensheathed within the rigidizing external sheath. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein releasing comprises releasing the negative pressure once the endoscope is ensheathed within the rigidizing external sheath so that an outer surface of the endoscope is covered by the rigidizing external sheath and the lumen of the endoscope is covered by the internal sheath, and wherein the rigidizing external sheath is sealingly connected to the cap and the internal sheath is sealingly connected to the cap so that an inner lumen of the internal sheath is open through the cap. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein sliding the rigidizing external sheath over the endoscope comprises sliding the rigidizing external sheath while the rigidizing external sheath is in a rigid configuration by the application of a negative pressure. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising converting the endoscope system between a flexible configuration and a more rigid configuration by releasing and applying pressure to the rigidizing external sheath. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting a second internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into a second lumen of the endoscope. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein inserting the internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into the lumen of the endoscope comprises inserting a multi-lumen internal sheath. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein engaging the cap comprises engaging a friction fit between the cap and a distal end region of the endoscope. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein engaging the cap comprises engaging a cylindrical mating surface of the cap with a distal end region of the endoscope while compressing the cylindrical mating surface from an oval resting cross-sectional configuration into a substantially circular mating cross-sectional configuration. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein releasing the applied pressure comprises permitting the rigidizing external sheath to elastically recoil and fit snugly against the endoscope. 10. A method of attaching a rigidizing external sheath to an endoscope, the method comprising: inserting an internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into a lumen of the endoscope, wherein the internal sheath extends from a distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath; sliding the rigidizing external sheath over the endoscope while the rigidizing external sheath is in a rigid configuration by applying a negative pressure within the rigidizing endoscope to enlarge the space between the rigidizing external sheath and the endoscope, so that the endoscope is within a lumen of the rigidizing external sheath and the internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath is within the lumen of the endoscope; engaging the distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath with a distal end region of the endoscope; and releasing the negative pressure once the endoscope is ensheathed within the rigidizing external sheath, so that the rigidizing external sheath is in a flexible configuration. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein releasing comprises releasing the negative pressure once the endoscope is ensheathed within the rigidizing external sheath so that an outer surface of the endoscope is covered by the rigidizing external sheath and the lumen of the endoscope is covered by the internal sheath, and wherein the rigidizing external sheath is sealingly connected to the cap and the internal sheath is sealingly connected to the cap so that an inner lumen of the internal sheath is open through the cap. 12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising converting the endoscope system between a flexible configuration and a more rigid configuration by releasing and applying pressure to the rigidizing external sheath. 13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising inserting a second internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into a second lumen of the endoscope. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein inserting the internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into the lumen of the endoscope comprises inserting a multi-lumen internal sheath. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein engaging the cap comprises engaging a friction fit between the cap and a distal end region of the endoscope. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein engaging the cap comprises engaging a cylindrical mating surface of the cap with a distal end region of the endoscope while compressing the cylindrical mating surface from an oval resting cross-sectional configuration into a substantially circular mating cross-sectional configuration. 17. The method of claim 10 , wherein releasing the applied pressure comprises permitting the rigidizing external sheath to elastically recoil and fit snugly against the endoscope. 18. A method of attaching a rigidizing external sheath to an endoscope, the method comprising: inserting a proximal end of an internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath into a distal end of a lumen of the endoscope, wherein the internal sheath extends from a distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath; sliding the rigidizing external sheath over the endoscope, and the internal sheath into the lumen of the endoscope, while applying a negative pressure within the rigidizing endoscope to enlarge a space between the rigidizing external sheath and the endoscope, so that the endoscope is within a lumen of the rigidizing external sheath and the internal sheath of the rigidizing external sheath is within the lumen of the endoscope; engaging the distal cap of the rigidizing external sheath with a distal end region of the endoscope; and releasing the negative pressure after the endoscope is ensheathed within the rigidizing external sheath.
