Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A support garment can include a textile layer forming a supportive region and configured to adjustably permit or inhibit displacement of a body part of the wearer that is positioned adjacent or proximate the supportive region. The garment can include an electroadhesive clutch device to help control displacement. In an example, the garment includes an underwear garment or a portion thereof.

What is claimed is: 1. A support garment for a wearer, comprising: a textile layer forming a supportive region configured to adjustably inhibit displacement of a body part of the wearer positioned proximate the supportive region; a hollow strap affixed to a portion of the textile layer, wherein the hollow strap encases an electroadhesive clutch device having a first electrode assembly, a second electrode assembly distinct from the first electrode assembly and at least partially overlapping with, and configured to slide laterally relative to, the first electrode assembly; and an electrical signal generator configured to provide one or more signals to the first and second electrode assemblies, the electroadhesive clutch device configured to selectively adjust an amount by which the garment allows displacement of the body part proximate the supportive region. 2. The support garment of claim 1 , wherein the support garment is a sports bra and the supportive region is a cup of the sports bra. 3. The support garment of claim 2 , wherein the hollow strap is a first hollow strap, the electroadhesive clutch is a first electroadhesive clutch, and the cup is a first cup, and wherein the support garment further comprises a second hollow strap affixed to a second portion of the textile layer forming a second supportive region, the second hollow strap encasing a second electroadhesive clutch device and the second supportive region is a second cup of the sports bra. 4. The support garment of claim 3 , wherein each of the first and second clutch devices are individually controllable. 5. The support garment of claim 3 , wherein the first and second clutch devices are configured to selectively and concurrently adjust an amount by which the support garment allows displacement of the body part. 6. The support garment of claim 1 , wherein the support garment is an athletic supporter, the hollow strap is a right hollow strap affixed to a right side of the textile layer forming the supportive region, the support garment further comprises a left hollow strap affixed to a left side of the textile layer forming the supportive region, and clutch devices in the right and left hollow straps are configured to selectively inhibit displacement of the body part of the wearer. 7. The support garment of claim 6 , further comprising respective displacement sensors configured to measure displacement of the first and second hollow straps, and wherein the clutch devices are configured to respond to information from the displacement sensors about the displacement. 8. The support garment of claim 1 , further comprising an accelerometer configured to measure motion of the electroadhesive clutch and generate one or more signals based on the measured motion. 9. The support garment of claim 8 , wherein the clutch device is configured to immobilize the first and second electrode assemblies when the motion as-measured indicates the wearer exceeds a threshold acceleration and is otherwise configured to allow motion of one or both of the first and second electrode assemblies. 10. The support garment of claim 1 , wherein the first and second hollow straps are waterproof encasings. 11. A method, comprising: forming a textile layer of a support garment having a supportive region; forming a hollow strap to be affixed to a portion of the textile layer, the hollow strap encasing an electroadhesive clutch device having a substantially planar first conductive portion and a substantially planar second conductive portion, the electroadhesive clutch device selectively inhibiting or allowing motion of the supportive region relative to a body portion of a wearer of the textile layer. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the support garment is a sports bra and the supportive region is a cup of the sports bra. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the hollow strap is a first hollow strap and the electroadhesive clutch is a first electroadhesive clutch, the support garment further comprises a second hollow strap affixed to a second portion of the textile layer, the second hollow strap encasing a second electroadhesive clutch device having a substantially planar third conductive portion and a substantially planar fourth conductive portion. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, using a signal generator, providing respective electrical signals to the first and second electroadhesive clutch devices to actuate the devices. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first and second electroadhesive clutch devices are configured to concurrently actuate or disengage. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the support garment is an athletic supporter, the hollow strap is a right hollow strap affixed to a right side of the textile layer forming the supportive region, the support garment further comprises a left hollow strap affixed to a left side of the textile layer forming the supportive region, the right and left hollow straps configured to selectively inhibit displacement of the body part of the wearer. 17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising measuring an acceleration of the body portion, wherein the electroadhesive clutch device is configured to actuate when the acceleration as-measured is greater than a threshold acceleration and is otherwise configured to disengage. 18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising actuating an electroluminescent portion of the clutch device in coordination with the selectively inhibiting or allowing motion of the supportive region. 19. An article of apparel, comprising: a modular panel for selectively coupling to a support garment, the modular panel including: an electroadhesive clutch device having a first electrode assembly, a second electrode assembly distinct from the first electrode assembly at least partially overlapping and configured to slide laterally relative to the first electrode assembly, and an electrical signal generator to provide one or more signals to the first and second electrode assemblies, the electroadhesive clutch device configured to selectively adjust an amount by which a support portion of the article of apparel allows displacement of a body part proximate the supportive region when the apparel is worn. 20. The article of apparel of claim 19 , wherein the modular panel further comprises an accelerometer configured to measure an acceleration of the electroadhesive clutch, wherein the clutch device is configured to actuate based on a relationship between the acceleration as-measured and a specified threshold acceleration. 21. The article of apparel of claim 19 , wherein the electroadhesive clutch device comprises an electroluminescent component that is configured to illuminate in coordination with actuation of the clutch device. 22. A modular device for use with an article of apparel, the device comprising: an interface configured to mechanically couple with a corresponding interface on the article of apparel; and an electroadhesive clutch device having a first electrode assembly, a second electrode assembly distinct from the first electrode assembly at least partially overlapping with, and configured to slide laterally relative to, the first electrode assembly, and an electrical signal generator configured to provide one or more signals to the first and second electrode assemblies. 23. The modular device of claim 22 , wherein the interface of the modular device includes a hook-and-loop fastener to couple the modular device with the article of apparel.
