Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A check valve includes a housing that includes an inlet port, an outlet port, and a valve chamber. The inlet port extends from a ceiling of the valve chamber to an outer surface of the housing. The outlet port extends from a floor of the valve chamber to the outer surface of the housing. The check valve further includes a valve member supported within the chamber. The valve includes a valve head. When an upstream pressure is applied to the valve, the valve head is configured to deflect away from the ceiling of the valve chamber and unseal the inlet port. When a downstream pressure is applied to the valve, the valve head is configured to deflect away from the floor of the valve chamber and seal the inlet port such that the valve head conforms to a shape of the ceiling of the valve chamber.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. An IV check valve, comprising: a housing comprising an inlet port, an outlet port, and a valve chamber, the inlet port forming a first opening through a ceiling of the valve chamber and extending to an outer surface of the housing, the outlet port forming a second opening through a floor of the valve chamber and extending to the outer surface of the housing, wherein a width of the first opening is larger than a width of the second opening; and a valve member comprising a valve head and a valve stem extending longitudinally from the valve head, wherein the valve member is supported within the valve chamber by the valve stem disposed in the second opening such that a central portion of an upper surface of the valve head is engaged against the first opening and a gap is formed between the ceiling of the valve chamber and a periphery of the upper surface of the valve member; wherein when an upstream pressure is applied to the valve member, the valve head is bendable to deflect away from the ceiling of the valve chamber and unseal the first opening, and when a downstream pressure is applied to the valve member, the valve head is bendable to deflect away from the floor of the valve chamber and seal the first opening such that the valve head conforms to a shape of the ceiling of the valve chamber. 2. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the first opening defines an area of the ceiling engaged against the upper surface of the valve head, and the second opening defines an area of the floor engaged against the valve stem, the area of the second opening being smaller than the area of the first opening. 3. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve member comprises an umbrella-like shape. 4. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the ceiling of the valve chamber comprises a dome-shaped ceiling. 5. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface of the valve head is configured to engage against a rim of the first opening. 6. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the valve head decreases from a central portion towards a periphery of the valve head. 7. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the gap between the ceiling of the valve chamber and an upper surface of the valve head is closed when the downstream pressure is applied to the valve. 8. The IV check valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve stem extends perpendicularly from a lower surface of the valve head. 9. An IV check valve, comprising: a housing comprising an inlet port, an outlet port, and a valve chamber, the inlet port forming a first opening through a ceiling of the valve chamber and extending to an outer surface of the housing, the outlet port forming a second opening through a floor of the valve chamber and extending to the outer surface of the housing, wherein an area defined by the first opening is larger than an area defined by the second opening; and a valve member comprising a valve head and a valve stem extending longitudinally from the valve head, wherein the valve member is supported within the valve chamber with the valve stem disposed in the second opening, a central portion of an upper surface of the valve head engaged against the first opening, and a gap formed between the ceiling of the valve chamber and a periphery of the upper surface of the valve member; wherein when an upstream pressure is applied to the valve member, the valve head is bendable away from the ceiling of the valve chamber to an open position in which the upper surface of the valve head unseals from the first opening, and when a downstream pressure is applied to the valve member, the valve head is bendable away from the floor of the valve chamber to a closed position in which the upper surface of the valve head seals the first opening such that the valve head conforms to a shape of the ceiling of the valve chamber. 10. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the first opening defines an area of the ceiling engaged against the upper surface of the valve head, and the second opening defines an area of the floor engaged against the valve stem, the area of the second opening being smaller than the area of the first opening. 11. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the valve member comprises an umbrella-like shape. 12. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the ceiling of the valve chamber comprises a dome-shaped ceiling. 13. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein a thickness of the valve head decreases from a central portion towards a periphery of the valve head. 14. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the gap is closed when the downstream pressure is applied to the valve member. 15. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the valve head conforms to a shape of the ceiling of the valve chamber when the downstream pressure is applied to the valve member. 16. The IV check valve of claim 9 , wherein the valve stem extends perpendicularly from a lower surface of the valve head.
