Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A sole for an article of footwear, which has a medial side, a lateral side, a forefoot region, a midfoot region, and a heel region, includes a set of ridges concentrically aligned around and emanating outwardly from an epicenter. The epicenter is disposed within the forefoot region and is closer to the medial side than the lateral side. The set of ridges is disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region. A set of spaces extends concentrically between respective ridges of the set of ridges. The set of ridges includes a plurality of short portions having a height that is smaller than heights of adjacent tall portions of the set of ridges. A flex zone is defined by at least some of the plurality of short portions and is configured to flex more than one or more stiffening zones of the sole.

What is claimed is: 1. A sole for an article of footwear having a medial side, a lateral side, a forefoot region, a midfoot region, and a heel region, the sole comprising: a set of ridges concentrically aligned around and emanating outwardly from an epicenter that is disposed within the forefoot region and closer to the medial side than the lateral side, and the set of ridges is disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region, and a set of spaces that extend concentrically between respective ridges of the set of ridges, wherein the set of ridges includes a plurality of short portions having a height that is smaller than heights of adjacent tall portions of the set of ridges, and wherein a flex zone is defined by at least some of the plurality of short portions and is configured to flex more than one or more stiffening zones of the sole. 2. The sole of claim 1 , wherein each of the ridges of the set of ridges is circular, and wherein spaces of the set of spaces that are between adjacent ridges of the set of ridges are equidistant. 3. The sole of claim 1 , wherein the flex zone is configured to correspond with a location of a metatarsal-phalangeal joint of a wearer. 4. The sole of claim 3 , wherein the epicenter is positioned to correspond with a first metatarsal-phalangeal joint of a big toe of the wearer and the flex zone corresponds with a second metatarsal metatarsal-phalangeal joint of the wearer. 5. The sole of claim 1 , wherein the tall portions of the set of ridges are disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region. 6. The sole of claim 1 , wherein the flex zone widens, extending in a direction away from the epicenter, toward the lateral side. 7. The sole of claim 1 , wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend around less than a complete circle, and wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend in a complete circle. 8. The sole of claim 7 , wherein an innermost ridge of the set of ridges extends in a complete circle. 9. The sole of claim 1 , wherein the set of ridges includes eleven ridges between the epicenter and a toe end of the sole. 10. The sole of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of short portions includes aligned short portions of consecutive ridges of the set of ridges that define the flex zone. 11. The sole of claim 10 , wherein the flex zone extends toward the lateral side from the epicenter. 12. The sole of claim 1 , wherein each ridge of the set of ridges has a triangular cross section that tapers inwardly from a base toward a distal edge. 13. A sole for an article of footwear having a medial side, a lateral side, a forefoot region, a midfoot region, and a heel region, the sole comprising: a set of ridges concentrically aligned around and emanating outwardly from an epicenter that is disposed within the forefoot region and closer to the medial side than the lateral side, and the set of ridges is disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region, and a set of spaces that extend concentrically between respective ridges of the set of ridges, wherein a flex zone is defined by at least some of a plurality of short portions and is configured to flex more than one or more stiffening zones of the sole, wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend around less than a complete circle, and wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend in a complete circle. 14. The sole of claim 13 , wherein the flex zone is configured to correspond with a location of a metatarsal-phalangeal joint of a wearer. 15. The sole of claim 13 , wherein the set of ridges includes the plurality of short portions, the plurality of short portions having a height that is smaller than heights of adjacent tall portions of the set of ridges. 16. The sole of claim 15 , wherein the tall portions of the set of ridges are disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region. 17. The sole of claim 13 , wherein the flex zone widens, extending in a direction away from the epicenter, toward the lateral side. 18. The sole of claim 13 , wherein each of the ridges of the set of ridges is circular, and wherein spaces of the set of spaces that are between adjacent ridges of the set of ridges are equidistant. 19. The sole of claim 12 , wherein an innermost ridge of the set of ridges extends in a complete circle. 20. The sole of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of short portions includes aligned short portions of consecutive ridges of the set of ridges that define the flex zone. 21. The sole of claim 20 , wherein the flex zone extends toward the lateral side from the epicenter. 22. The sole of claim 13 , wherein each ridge of the set of ridges has a triangular cross section that tapers inwardly from a base toward a distal edge. 23. A sole for an article of footwear having a medial side, a lateral side, a forefoot region, a midfoot region, and a heel region, the sole comprising: a set of ridges concentrically aligned around and emanating outwardly from an epicenter that is disposed within the forefoot region and closer to the medial side than the lateral side, and a set of spaces that extend concentrically between respective ridges of the set of ridges, wherein a flex zone is defined by at least some of the set of ridges and is configured to flex more than one or more stiffening zones of the sole, wherein the flex zone widens, extending in a direction away from the epicenter, toward the lateral side; and wherein the set of ridges and the set of spaces define a surface pattern along a ground-engaging surface that extends from a heel end to a toe end of the sole. 24. The sole of claim 23 , wherein each of the ridges is circular, and wherein spaces of the set of spaces that are between adjacent ridges of the set of ridges are equidistant. 25. The sole of claim 23 , wherein the flex zone is configured to correspond with a location of a metatarsal-phalangeal joint of a wearer. 26. The sole of claim 23 , wherein the set of ridges includes a plurality of short portions having a height that is smaller than heights of adjacent tall portions of the set of ridges. 27. The sole of claim 26 , wherein the tall portions of the set of ridges are disposed in each of the forefoot region, the midfoot region, and the heel region. 28. The sole of claim 26 , wherein the plurality of short portions includes aligned short portions of consecutive ridges of the set of ridges that define the flex zone. 29. The sole of claim 28 , wherein the flex zone is disposed on lateral and medial sides of the epicenter. 30. The sole of claim 23 , wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend around less than a complete circle, and wherein at least some ridges of the set of ridges extend in a complete circle. 31. The sole of claim 30 , wherein an innermost ridge of the set of ridges extends in a complete circle. 32.
