A pagewide printhead for redundant printing has first and second rows of printhead chips mounted on a common ink manifold. The ink manifold has four ink supply channels for supplying ink to the first and second rows of printhead chips. Dedicated ink outlets interconnect one ink supply channel of the ink manifold with two color channels in each printhead chip.

The invention claimed is: 1. An inkjet printhead configured for redundant printing, said printhead comprising: an elongate ink manifold having first, second, third and fourth ink supply channels; a first row of printhead chips butted end-on-end along a length of the ink manifold; a second row of printhead chips butted end-on-end along a length of the ink manifold, the second row of printhead chips being parallel with the first row of printhead chips, wherein the ink manifold comprises: first ink outlets interconnecting the first ink supply channel only with first and second color channels in the first row of printhead chips; second ink outlets interconnecting the second ink supply channel only with third and fourth color channels in the first row of printhead chips; third ink outlets interconnecting the third ink supply channel only with first and second color channels in the second row of printhead chips; and fourth ink outlets interconnecting the fourth ink supply channel only with third and fourth color channels in the second row of printhead chips. 2. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the second row of printhead chips is oppositely oriented relative to the first row of printhead chips. 3. The printhead of claim 2 , wherein further comprising first and second planar PCBs extending laterally away from respective first and second rows of printhead chips, the first and second PCBs being positioned in a plane parallel with a plane of the printhead chips. 4. The printhead of claim 3 , wherein opposite longitudinal edges of printhead chips in the first and second rows have bond pads for electrical connection to respective first and second PCBs. 5. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein a distance between the first and second rows of printhead chips is less than 30 mm. 6. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the ink manifold is comprised of a metal alloy. 7. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein the ink outlets extend perpendicularly with respect to the ink supply channels. 8. The printhead of claim 7 , wherein the first and second rows of printhead chips are mounted to the ink manifold via one or more shims, each printhead chip receiving ink from respective ink outlets via openings in a respective shim. 9. The printhead of claim 7 , wherein the first, second, third and fourth ink supply channels are parallel and extend longitudinally along a length of the printhead. 10. The printhead of claim 1 , wherein: the first and second color channels of the first row of printhead chips are aligned in a printing direction for redundant printing; the third and fourth color channels of the first row of printhead chips are aligned in a printing direction for redundant printing; the first and second color channels of the second row of printhead chips are aligned in a printing direction for redundant printing; and the third and fourth color channels of the second row of printhead chips are aligned in a printing direction for redundant printing.
