A luminaire module includes light-emitting elements (LEEs) arranged to provide light; a light guide including a receiving end and an opposing end, the receiving end arranged to receive light provided by the LEEs, a core including a first transparent material with a first refractive index, the core having a pair of opposing side surfaces extending along a length of the light guide between the receiving and opposing ends, and a cladding including a second material having a second smaller refractive index, the cladding extending across and being in contact with at least a portion of the opposing side surfaces forming a cladding-core interface. The cladding-core interface is optically smooth. Additionally, the luminaire module includes an optical extractor arranged to receive guided light from the opposing end of the light guide and configured to output into the ambient environment at least some of the received guided light.

What is claimed is: 1. A device comprising: a light guide comprising: a receiving end and an opposing end separated by a depth of the light guide, the receiving end arranged to receive light, the light guide configured to guide received light in a forward direction along the depth of the light guide toward the opposing end of the light guide; a core comprising a transparent core material with a first refractive index, n 1 , the core having an optically rough side surface extending between the receiving end and the opposing end; and a first cladding comprising a transparent first cladding material having a refractive index matching the first refractive index n 1 of the core material, the first cladding arranged on the optically rough side surface, wherein the device is a luminaire. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the light guide further comprises a second cladding comprising a second cladding material, the second cladding material having a second refractive index, n 2 , wherein n 2 <n 1 , the second cladding being arranged on the first cladding. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the first cladding is larger than a root mean square (RMS) measure of roughness of the optically rough side surface. 4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the thickness of the cladding is in a range of 3×RMS to 6×RMS. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the received light has a divergence 2θ and the first refractive index n 1 satisfies the following condition 2θ≤2(π/2−ArcSin(1/n 1 )). 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optically rough side surface comprises a curved portion in a plane perpendicular to the forward direction and a straight portion in a plane parallel to the forward direction. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the optically rough side surface comprises planar side surfaces. 8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the planar side surfaces comprise parallel side surfaces. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the received light is white light emitted from light emitting diodes (LEDs). 10. The device of claim 3 , wherein the first cladding has an outer surface opposite the optically rough side surface, and an RMS of the outer surface is smaller than the RMS of the optically rough side surface. 11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the light guide has a uniform thickness perpendicular the forward direction. 12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first cladding has a uniform thickness. 13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the light guide has a uniform depth. 14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first cladding extends along the full depth of the light guide. 15. The device of claim 2 , wherein the received light has a divergence 2θ and the following condition is satisfied 2θ≤2(π/2−ArcSin(n 2 /n 1 )).
