Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for controlling a functional road object. For example, at least one processor receives road sign attribute data indicating at least one attribute of a road sign and receives weather forecast data indicating a weather forecast of a location in which the road sign is disposed. The road sign includes at least one machinery for mitigating exposure to one or more weather conditions. The at least one processor identifies a state of visibility for the road sign using the road sign attribute data and the weather forecast data and generates a control signal for controlling the at least one machinery using the state of visibility.

We claim: 1. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer program code instructions stored therein, the computer program code instructions, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to: receive road sign attribute data indicating an orientation of a road sign, wherein the road sign includes a sign board displaying sign information; receive weather forecast data indicating a weather forecast of a location in which the road sign is disposed, the road sign including at least one machinery for mitigating exposure to one or more weather conditions; identify a state of visibility for the road sign by using a machine learning model to output a level of obscureness based on the road sign attribute data and the weather forecast data, the level of obscureness indicating a degree of which the sign information displayed by the road sign is obscured, wherein the machine learning model is trained using historical data indicating weather conditions of events, orientations of signs impacted by the weather conditions during the events, and visibility of the signs during the events; and based on the state of visibility, generate a control signal configured to control the at least one machinery, wherein the at least one machinery is configured to alter an angle of the sign board based on the control signal. 2. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the road sign attribute data is further indicates a location of the road sign, a size of the road sign, a classification of the road sign, yaw, pitch, and roll angles of the road sign, a height of the road sign, a color of the road sign, or a combination thereof. 3. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the weather forecast data includes a forecasted precipitation type, a forecasted precipitation intensity, a forecasted air temperature, a forecasted precipitation rate, and a forecasted wind direction. 4. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer program code instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to: receive a historical traffic data indicating, for at least one past time or duration, a degree of traffic affecting a road link in which the road sign is disposed; and generate the control signal using the historical traffic data. 5. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 4 , wherein the control signal is a first control signal is configured to cause the at least one machinery to alter the sign board to a first angle, wherein a second control signal is configured to cause the at least one machinery to alter the sign board to a second different angle, the second angle defining a resting position of the sign board, and wherein the computer program code instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to: using the road sign attribute data and the weather forecast data, predict whether the level of obscureness satisfies a threshold for a future time or duration; and responsive to the level of obscureness satisfying the threshold for the future time or duration: using the historical traffic data, predict the degree of traffic for the future time or duration; responsive to the degree of traffic for the future time or duration being at a first degree, generate the first control signal for the future time or duration; and responsive to the degree of traffic for the future time or duration being at a second greater degree, generate the second control signal for the future time or duration. 6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 5 , wherein the future time or duration is a first future time or duration, and a second future time or duration is earlier than the first future time or duration, the second future time or duration defining a time or duration of which the degree of traffic is less than the second degree, and wherein the computer program code instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to, responsive to: (1) the level of obscureness satisfying the threshold for the first future time or duration; and (2) the degree of traffic for the first future time or duration being at the second degree: predict whether the second future time or duration exists; and responsive to the second future time or duration existing, generate the first control signal for the second future time or duration. 7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the control signal is a first control signal is configured to cause the at least one machinery to alter the sign board to a first angle, wherein a second control signal is configured to cause the at least one machinery to alter the sign board to a second different angle, the second angle defining a resting position of the sign board, and wherein the computer program code instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to: receive road attribute data indicating a first frequency of which a first population group traverses the road link and a second frequency of which a second population group utilizes the road link, wherein the road sign is disposed in the road link; responsive to the level of obscureness satisfying a threshold: compare the first frequency and the second frequency; responsive to the first frequency exceeding the second frequency, generate the second control signal; and responsive to the second frequency exceeding the first frequency, generate the first control signal. 8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the first population group defines locals of an area of which the road link is disposed, and wherein the second population group defines non-locals of the area. 9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the road sign further includes: a shield; and an arm having one end connected to the road sign and an opposing end connected to the shield, and wherein the at least one machinery is configured to cause the arm to deploy the shield over the road sign in response to the control signal. 10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the road sign further includes a heating pad, wherein the at least one machinery is configured to cause activate the heating pad in response to the control signal. 11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the at least one machinery is configured to cause the road sign to vibrate in response to the control signal. 12. An apparatus comprising at least one processor and at least one non-transitory memory including computer program code instructions, the computer program code instructions configured to, when executed, cause the apparatus to: receive road sign attribute data indicating at least one attribute of a dynamic road sign, the dynamic road sign including a display for dynamically displaying sign information; receive weather forecast data indicating a weather forecast of a location in which the dynamic road sign is disposed; identify a state of visibility for the dynamic road sign using the road sign attribute data and the weather forecast data; using the road sign attribute data and the weather forecast data, predict at least one attribute of an object that will obscure the display, wherein the at least one attribute indicate a type of object, a location of the object with respect to the display, a size of the object, a density of the object, or a combination thereof; and responsive to the state of
