The method of claim 15 , wherein the disease or condition characterized by a deficiency of or defect in an iron transporter is hypochromic, microcytic anemia. 17. A method of increasing (a) transepithelial iron transport, (b) physiology, (c) hemoglobinization, or (d) iron release, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of tropolone and a compound of claim 1 . 18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising administering an effective amount of one or more additional compounds selected from the group consisting of amphotericin B (AmB), calcimycin, nonactin, deferiprone, purpurogallin, and maltol. 19. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R b is hydrogen. 20. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R b is methyl. 21. The compound of claim 1 , provided that if R a is then R b is methyl. 22.
