Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of implanting a prosthetic apparatus preferably includes delivering the prosthetic apparatus to a native mitral valve and exposing ventricular anchors and a spacer body of the prosthetic apparatus from a distal end portion of a delivery apparatus. The ventricular anchors are controllably and forcibly expanded outwardly from the spacer body to an expanded configuration. The prosthetic apparatus is positioned relative to the native mitral valve such that native mitral valve leaflets are located between the ventricular anchors and the spacer body. The ventricular anchors are then contracted radially inwardly toward the spacer body to a compressed configuration. In the compressed configuration, the native mitral valve leaflets are secured between the ventricular anchors and the spacer body. After implantation, the spacer body is held between the native mitral valve leaflets, thereby blocking regurgitation and improving the function of the native mitral valve.

We claim: 1. A method of implanting a prosthetic spacer, the method comprising: delivering the prosthetic spacer to a native mitral valve with a delivery apparatus, wherein the prosthetic spacer comprises a plurality of anchors and a spacer body, wherein the anchors and the spacer body are disposed within a distal end portion of the delivery apparatus, and wherein the anchors are in a delivery configuration; exposing the anchors of the prosthetic spacer from the distal end portion of the delivery apparatus; positioning the anchors of the prosthetic spacer on a ventricular side of native mitral valve leaflets; wherein the delivery apparatus comprises a plurality of anchor spreaders, wherein each anchor spreader is releasably coupled to a respective anchor of the prosthetic spacer; moving the anchors radially outwardly from the delivery configuration to a leaflet capture configuration; and moving the anchors radially inwardly such that leaflets of the native mitral valve leaflets are pinched between the anchors and the spacer body. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the act of moving the anchors radially outwardly comprises moving a first shaft of the delivery apparatus relative to a second shaft of the delivery apparatus. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the act of moving the anchors radially inwardly comprises moving a first shaft of the delivery apparatus relative to a second shaft of the delivery apparatus. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic spacer comprises exactly two anchors, and wherein the delivery apparatus comprises exactly two anchor spreaders. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein an anterior leaflet of the native mitral valve leaflets is secured to the prosthetic spacer by a first anchor of the exactly two anchors, and a posterior leaflet of the native mitral valve leaflets is secured to the prosthetic spacer by a second anchor of the exactly two anchors. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the anchors comprises a U-shaped portion. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anchors are covered with cloth. 8. A method for implanting a prosthetic spacer device, the method comprising: delivering the prosthetic spacer device to a native mitral valve, wherein the prosthetic spacer device includes a spacer body, a first anchor, and a second anchor, and wherein the prosthetic spacer device is releasably coupled to a distal end portion of a delivery apparatus; wherein the delivery apparatus comprises a first anchor spreader and a second anchor spreader, wherein the first anchor spreader of the delivery apparatus is releasably coupled to the first anchor of the prosthetic spacer device, and wherein the second anchor spreader of the delivery apparatus is releasably coupled to the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device; expanding the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device radially outwardly by moving a first shaft of the delivery apparatus relative to a second shaft of the delivery apparatus; positioning the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device on a ventricular side of native mitral valve leaflets; and compressing the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device radially inwardly such that the first anchor and the second anchor draw leaflets of the native mitral valve against the spacer body of the prosthetic spacer device. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the act of moving the first shaft of the delivery apparatus relative to the second shaft of the delivery apparatus comprises moving the first shaft proximally relative to the second shaft of the delivery apparatus. 10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first anchor and the second anchor comprise cloth coverings. 11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first anchor and the second anchor comprise barbs configured to engage the native mitral valve leaflets. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the delivery apparatus comprises flexible catheter, wherein the prosthetic spacer device is releasably coupled to the flexible catheter. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein prior to the act of releasing the first anchor and the second anchor, the method further comprises aligning the first anchor with an A 2 region of a native anterior leaflet and aligning the second anchor with a P 2 region of a native posterior leaflet. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the anchors are radially expanded outwardly from the spacer body to the expanded configuration by a pulling force. 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the anchors are biased radially inwardly. 16. A method of implanting a prosthetic spacer, the method comprising: delivering the prosthetic spacer to a native mitral valve with a delivery apparatus, wherein the prosthetic spacer comprises a plurality of anchors and a spacer body, wherein the anchors and the spacer body are disposed within a distal end portion of the delivery apparatus, and wherein the anchors are in a delivery configuration; exposing the anchors of the prosthetic spacer from the distal end portion of the delivery apparatus; positioning the anchors of the prosthetic spacer on a ventricular side of native mitral valve leaflets; wherein the delivery apparatus comprises a plurality of sutures that run along the delivery apparatus, wherein each suture is releasably coupled to a respective anchor of the prosthetic spacer; moving the anchors radially outwardly from the delivery configuration to a leaflet capture configuration; and moving the anchors radially inwardly such that leaflets of the native mitral valve are pinched between the anchors and the spacer body. 17. A method for implanting a prosthetic spacer device, the method comprising: delivering the prosthetic spacer device to a native mitral valve, wherein the prosthetic spacer device includes a spacer body, a first anchor, and a second anchor, and wherein the prosthetic spacer device is releasably coupled to a distal end portion of a delivery apparatus; wherein the delivery apparatus comprises a first suture that extends along the delivery apparatus and a second suture that extends along the delivery apparatus, wherein the first suture is releasably coupled to the first anchor of the prosthetic spacer device, and wherein the second suture is releasably coupled to the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device; expanding the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device radially outwardly by moving a first shaft of the delivery apparatus relative to a second shaft of the delivery apparatus; positioning the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device on a ventricular side of native mitral valve leaflets; and compressing the first anchor and the second anchor of the prosthetic spacer device radially inwardly such that the first anchor and the second anchor draw leaflets of the native mitral valve against the spacer body of the prosthetic spacer device.
