Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of registering a location of a dispenser array in relation to a microfluidic array is provided. One of the dispenser array and the microfluidic array can be movable in relation to the frame, and the other can be fixed relative to the frame. Their relative positions can be identified by a set of coordinates. Identification of a fiducial marker can occur in a manner permitting the fiducial reference to appear in a first position of a field of view of a first camera when the dispenser array or the microfluidic array is in an alignment position. Quantities related to a vector displacement from the alignment position to a fixed position on the microfluidic array or the dispenser array can be identified. Quantities determined can be used to guide positioning of the dispenser array relative to the microfluidic array.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system for dispensing sample fluid, the system comprising: a dispensing mechanism comprising a plurality of dispensers positioned in a dispenser array; a receptacle device comprising a plurality of receptacles arranged in a receptacle array, each receptacle configured to receive sample fluid from one of the one or more dispensers, the receptacle device having a first side facing the dispensing mechanism and a second side opposite the first side; a fiducial reference comprising at least one of the plurality of receptacles; a sensing mechanism arranged opposite the second side of the receptacle device and configured to detect one of the plurality of dispensers by sensing the one of the plurality of dispensers through a receptacle of the receptacle array; and a controller configured to: receive position information about the fiducial reference from the sensing mechanism, and cause alignment of the dispenser array and the receptacle device based upon the position information. 2. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a rotational stage configured to rotate at least one of the dispenser array and the receptacle array to cause alignment of the dispenser array and the receptacle array. 3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensing mechanism comprises at least one camera. 4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the sensing mechanism comprises one or more sensors for detecting positions of the fiducial reference and the one of the plurality of dispensers relative to the fiducial reference. 5. The system according to claim 4 , wherein the one or more sensors comprises one of an optic sensor and an acoustic sensor. 6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein each dispenser within the dispenser array has an expected position relative to other dispensers in the dispenser array, the expected positions of each dispenser in the dispenser array forming a template; wherein on a condition that one or more dispensers of the dispenser array deviate from their expected position, the controller and rotational stage approximate locations of each dispenser in the dispenser array using the template and align dispensers of the dispenser array with the receptacle array as a function of the approximate locations of each dispenser in the dispenser array. 7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the receptacle device is a microfluidic device. 8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the fiducial reference comprises at least: a first fiducial reference comprising a first receptacle of the plurality of receptacles; a second fiducial reference comprising a second receptacle of the plurality of receptacles; and a third fiducial reference comprising a third receptacle of the plurality of receptacles; wherein the sensing mechanism is configured to detect the one of the plurality of dispensers relative to the first, second, and third fiducial references through the first, second, and third receptacles. 9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the first, second, and third fiducial references are each located in respective different corners of the receptacle array. 10. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the receptacles of the receptacle array comprise through holes.
