Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A bone plate can be used to fixate one or more bones. In some examples, the bone plate defines an elongated body having a plurality of fixation holes arrayed at different points along the length of the body. For example, the bone plate may have opposed fixation holes separated by a bridge. The bone plate may be bent or shaped along a central longitudinal axis extending through the elongated body and also twisted around the central longitudinal axis. The bending and twisting can position each fixation hole of the elongated body in a different plane in three-dimensional space.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: positioning a first bone plate having a proximal region, a distal region, and an intermediate region across a metatarsal-cuneiform joint between a metatarsal and a cuneiform, wherein the proximal region has only two fixation holes, the distal region has only two fixation holes, and the intermediate region is devoid of fixation holes, and positioning the first bone plate across the metatarsal-cuneiform joint comprise positioning the proximal region over the cuneiform, positioning the distal region over the metatarsal, and positioning the intermediate region over the metatarsal-cuneiform joint; inserting bone fasteners into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate, thereby securing the first bone plate to the metatarsal and to the cuneiform with the intermediate region devoid of fixation holes over the metatarsal-cuneiform joint; positioning a second bone plate across the metatarsal-cuneiform joint at a location offset approximately 90 degrees from the first bone plate about a circumference of the metatarsal and the cuneiform, wherein the second bone plate has a proximal region, a distal region, and an intermediate region, the proximal region has only two fixation holes, the distal region has only two fixation holes, and the intermediate region is devoid of fixation holes, and positioning the second bone plate across the metatarsal-cuneiform joint comprise positioning the proximal region over the cuneiform, positioning the distal region over the metatarsal, and positioning the intermediate region over the metatarsal-cuneiform joint; and inserting bone fasteners into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate, thereby securing the second bone plate to the metatarsal and to the cuneiform with the intermediate region devoid of fixation holes over the metatarsal-cuneiform joint. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to positioning the first bone plate and positioning the second bone plate, modifying an alignment of the metatarsal to correct a bunion. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning the first bone plate and positioning the second bone plate comprises positioning either the first bone plate or the second bone plate over a top surface of the metatarsal and the cuneiform, and positioning an other of the first bone plate or the second bone plate over a side surface of the metatarsal and the cuneiform. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining the first bone plate, the second bone plate, bone fasteners for insertion into fixation holes of the first bone plate, and bone fasteners for insertion into fixation holes of the second bone plate from a sterile pack, wherein the sterile pack contains the first bone plate, the second bone plate, a first set of bone fasteners having a first length, and a second set of bone fasteners having a second length. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the first bone plate defines a length; the second bone plate defines a length; and positioning the first bone plate and positioning the second bone plate comprises positioning the length of the first bone plate parallel to the length of the second bone plate. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate are all in a same plane; and the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate are all in a same plane. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate are colinearly aligned with the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate; and the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate are colinearly aligned with the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein: inserting bone fasteners into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate comprises inserting fixation screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate; and inserting bone fasteners into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate comprises inserting fixation screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein: inserting fixation screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate comprises inserting locking screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate; and inserting fixation screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate comprises inserting locking screws into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein: the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate are all threaded holes; and the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate are all threaded holes. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate are all threaded holes, and further comprising attachment members threadingly inserted therein, the attachment members projecting away from a top surface of the first bone plate; and the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the second bone plate and the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the second bone plate are all threaded holes, and further comprising attachment members threadingly inserted therein, the attachment members projecting away from a top surface of the second bone plate. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: guiding a drill through the attachment members projecting away from the top surface of the first bone plate; and guiding the drill through the attachment members projecting away from the top surface of the second bone plate. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: after guiding the drill through the attachment members projecting away from the top surface of the first bone plate, removing the attachment members prior to inserting bone fasteners into the only two fixation holes of the proximal region of the first bone plate and into the only two fixation holes of the distal region of the first bone plate; after guiding the drill through the attachment members projecting away from the t
