Official abstract text for this publication.
A payload loading system is disclosed. The payload loading system includes a UAV and a loading structure. A retractable tether is coupled to a payload coupling apparatus at a distal end and the UAV at a proximate end. A payload is loaded to the UAV by coupling the payload to the payload coupling apparatus. The loading structure of the payload loading system includes a landing platform and a tether guide. The tether guide is coupled to the landing platform and directs the tether as the UAV approaches and travels across at least a portion of the landing platform such that the payload coupling apparatus arrives at a target location. The payload is loaded to the payload coupling apparatus while the payload coupling apparatus is within the target location.

We claim: 1. A structure, comprising: a loading structure for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), wherein the UAV comprises a tether and a payload coupling apparatus, wherein the payload coupling apparatus is coupled to a distal end of the tether, the loading structure comprising: a tether guide configured to guide the tether so as to direct the payload coupling apparatus to a target location, the tether guide including a first tapered portion that tapers inward from a proximal end to a distal end; and a landing platform coupled to the proximal end of the first tapered portion of the tether guide and extending around the tether guide, wherein the landing platform includes landing pads positioned around the tether guide. 2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the tether guide is conical. 3. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first tapered portion of the tether guide extends down from the landing platform. 4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the first tapered portion is coupled to the landing platform at an edge of the tether guide. 5. The structure of claim 4 , wherein the edge is circular. 6. The structure of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the first tapered portion at the proximate end of the first tapered portion is greater than a diameter of the first tapered portion at a distal end of the first tapered portion. 7. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the tether guide includes a second tapered portion, concentric with the first tapered portion. 8. The structure of claim 7 , wherein a diameter of a distal end of the second tapered portion is greater than a diameter of a proximate end of the second tapered portion. 9. The structure of claim 7 , wherein a proximate end of the second tapered portion is the same as the diameter of the distal end of the first tapered portion. 10. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the tether guide is configured to receive more than one tether of more than one UAV at a single time. 11. The structure of claim 1 , wherein each landing pad is configured to charge a UAV when the UAV is in contact with the landing pad. 12. A warehouse for loading unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the warehouse comprising: a plurality of openings for entry and exit of UAVs into and out of the warehouse; and a plurality of loading structures within the warehouse, each of the loading structures comprising: a landing platform for a UAV; a tether guide coupled to the landing platform, wherein the tether guide is configured to direct a retractable tether of the UAV as the UAV approaches the landing platform such that a payload coupling apparatus disposed on a distal end of the tether arrives at a target location, and an opening, wherein the tether guide directs the retractable tether such that the payload coupling apparatus passes through the opening of the loading structure. 13. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein each of the loading structures includes landing pads. 14. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein each of the landing pads is configured to charge a UAV when the UAV lands on the landing pad. 15. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein the tether guide comprises an edge of the landing platform. 16. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein the tether guide comprises a stanchion coupled to a bottom side of the landing platform. 17. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein the tether guide is coupled to a bottom side of the landing platform such that the tether guide is at a lower elevation than the landing platform. 18. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein the tether guide directs the tether after the tether has been extended from the UAV. 19. The warehouse of claim 12 , wherein the tether guide defines a plurality of tether paths, wherein the tether follows one of the tether paths as the UAV travels across the landing platform, and wherein each of the plurality of tether paths direct the tether such that the payload coupling apparatus arrives at the target location.
