Official abstract text for this publication.
A stent delivery system including an elongate shaft of a medical device, a stent selectively coupled to a distal portion of the elongate shaft, and a coupling mechanism for selectively coupling the stent to the elongate shaft by inserting a tab on one of the stent or the elongate shaft into an opening in the other of the stent or the elongate shaft. The tab may be deflected from a first position to a second position to disengage the tab from the opening.

What is claimed is: 1. A drainage stent delivery system comprising: a drainage stent including a tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough; an elongate shaft extending distally from a handle assembly to a location proximate the drainage stent, a distal portion of the elongate shaft including a tab extendable into the lumen of the drainage stent, the tab being configured for selective engagement with the drainage stent; and an elongate member extending axially through the elongate shaft, the elongate member being axially movable from a first position to a second position, wherein in the second position the tab is deflected into engagement with the drainage stent and in the first position the tab is disengaged from the drainage stent to allow the drainage stent to be released from the elongate shaft. 2. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the tab extends distally from a distal end of the elongate shaft. 3. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of said tabs. 4. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the tab comprises a tip that is configured to engage with an opening formed in or through the tubular member of the drainage stent. 5. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 4 , where the opening is selected from a groove, a channel, a blind hole and a through hole. 6. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 4 , where the opening is formed as a result of a barb being cut from the tubular member. 7. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the tab comprises a curved tip. 8. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 7 , wherein the curved tip moves toward a central longitudinal axis of the drainage stent when the elongate member is axially moved from the second position to the first position. 9. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 7 , wherein the curved tip curves radially outward away from a central longitudinal axis of the drainage stent. 10. The drainage stent delivery system of claim 9 , wherein a portion of the tab proximal to the curved tip extends radially inward toward a central longitudinal axis of the drainage stent. 11. A method of selectively decoupling a drainage stent from an elongate shaft of a medical device, the method comprising: providing a drainage stent delivery system comprising: a drainage stent including a tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough; an elongate shaft extending distally from a handle assembly to a location proximate the drainage stent, a distal portion of the elongate shaft including a tab extendable into the lumen of the drainage stent, the tab being configured for selective engagement with the drainage stent; and an elongate member extending axially through the elongate shaft, the elongate member being axially movable from a first position to a second position; moving the elongate member from the second position, in which the tab is deflected into engagement with the drainage stent, to the first position, in which the tab becomes disengaged from the drainage stent, such that the drainage stent is released from the elongate shaft; withdrawing the elongate shaft from the stent while the elongate member is in the first position. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tab becomes disengaged from the drainage stent when in an equilibrium position and wherein the tab is deflected into engagement with the drainage stent by applying a force to the tab such that the tab is moved away from a central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft and into engagement with the drainage stent. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tab extends distally from a distal end of the elongate shaft. 14. The method of claim 11 , comprising a plurality of said tabs. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tab comprises a tip that is configured to engage with an opening formed in or through the tubular member of the drainage stent. 16. The method of claim 15 , where the opening is selected from a groove, a channel, a blind hole and a through hole. 17. The method of claim 15 , where the opening is formed as a result of a barb being cut from the tubular member. 18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tab comprises a curved tip. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the curved tip is configured to engage with an opening formed in or through the tubular member of the drainage stent. 20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the curved tip curves radially outward away from a central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft.
