Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for automatically modifying a user interface of a mobile computing device in a restaurant are described. In examples, the techniques include identifying selectable icons to display on the user interface, each of which represents an item offered for sale. The mobile computing device may comprise a first sensor for determining a location of the mobile computing device and a second sensor for determining environmental factors associated with the restaurant. At a first time and based on output of the first sensor, a location of the mobile computing device may be determined, and a set of selectable icons may be presented. Based at least in part on data from the second sensor, a change in environmental factor(s) may be determined. Based on the change in the second context, selectable icons may be dynamically modified and presented. The location and environmental factor(s) are determined without a user input.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method for automatically, dynamically modifying a user interface of a mobile computing device in a restaurant, the method comprising: identifying a plurality of selectable icons capable of display on the user interface of the mobile computing device, wherein each of the plurality of selectable icons represents an item of a plurality of items offered for sale by the restaurant, wherein each of the plurality of selectable icons is identified by the mobile computing device without communication with any other computing devices, wherein the mobile computing device comprises a first sensor for determining a location of the mobile computing device associated with the restaurant and a second sensor for determining one or more environmental factors associated with the restaurant; at a first time and based on output of the first sensor, determining a first context associated with the sale of at least one item of the plurality of items, wherein the first context comprises the location of the mobile computing device; based at least in part on the first context, presenting a set of selectable icons, of the plurality of selectable icons, to a user via the user interface of the mobile computing device; based at least in part on data from the second sensor, determining, at a second time, a change in a second context associated with the sale of the at least one item of the plurality of items, wherein the second context comprises at least one of the one or more environmental factors associated with the restaurant, wherein the second context is determined, without a user input; based on the change in the second context, determining a modified set of selectable icons by dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons; and presenting the modified set of selectable icons to the user via the user interface of the mobile computing device. 2. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors comprises lighting relative to the user or environmental volume relative to the user. 3. The method as claim 2 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors comprises the lighting and the second sensor comprises a light sensor. 4. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least of the one or more environmental factors comprises a weather factor. 5. The method as claim 4 recites, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons comprises emphasizing cold food or beverage items in hot weather and emphasizing hot food or beverage items in cold weather. 6. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors comprises a temporal factor, the method further comprising: determining, by the mobile computing device, a time; and determining, by the mobile computing device, that the at least one item is associated with the time and that at least one selectable icon of the plurality of selectable icons corresponds to the at least one item, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons comprises presenting the at least one selectable icon. 7. The method as claim 6 recites, wherein the temporal factor comprises at least one of a time of day, a day of week, a season, or a holiday period. 8. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors is an inventory factor associated with an inventory associated with the restaurant, the method further comprising: determining, by the mobile computing device, that a quantity of an item of inventory is greater than a threshold overstock number, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons comprises: identifying an icon of the set of selectable icons corresponding to the item; and presenting the icon at an increased size than a size of other icons of the set of selectable icons. 9. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors is an inventory factor associated with an inventory associated with the restaurant, the method further comprising: determining, by the mobile computing device, that a quantity of an item of inventory is less than a threshold understock number, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons comprises at least one of: removing an icon of the set of selectable icons corresponding to the item from the user interface; moving the icon to a different position in the set of selectable icons; deemphasizing the icon; or presenting a notification that the item is not available or has limited availability. 10. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors corresponds to a customer location of a customer or a courier location of a courier. 11. The method as claim 10 recites, further comprising: receiving, by the mobile computing device, a signal from a customer computing device associated with a customer profile; determining, by the mobile computing device, that the mobile computing device is within a threshold distance of the customer computing device based at least in part on the signal; identifying, by the mobile computing device, the customer profile based at least in part on the signal; and determining, by the mobile computing device, one or more preferences associated with the customer profile, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons is further based at least in part on the one or more preferences. 12. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors is a promotion factor, wherein the promotion factor includes one or more of an item a merchant associated with the restaurant has designated for up-sell, an item the merchant has designated for cross-sell, a sale item, or a special offer item. 13. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein dynamically modifying the set of selectable icons comprises altering a theme of the user interface, wherein the theme comprises one or more of background hue, an icon hue, a background image, an animation, brightness, or a sound associated with the user interface. 14. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein dynamically modifying a selectable icon of the set of selectable icons comprises changing one or more of: a size of the selectable icon, a shape of the selectable icon, a color of the selectable icon, a placement of the selectable icon with respect to other selectable icons of the set of selectable icons, an image associated with the selectable icon, or a text associated with the selectable icon. 15. The method as claim 1 recites, wherein the mobile computing device comprises a point-of-sale computing device. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified set of selectable icons indicate user preferences of the user. 17. The method as claim 2 recites, wherein the at least one of the one or more environmental factors comprises the environmental volume and wherein the second sensor comprises a volume sensor. 18. A system comprising: one or more processors; and one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions program the one or more processors to perform acts comprising: identifying a plurality of selectable icons capable of display on a user interface of a mobile computing device in a restaurant, wherein each of the plurality of selectable icons represents an item of a plurality of items offered for sale by the restaurant, wherein each of the plurality of selectable icons is iden
