A covering for architectural openings includes a cord drive with a pulley that is supported by a bearing surface which lies in the plane of the cord.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A covering assembly for an architectural opening, the covering assembly comprising: a rail; a covering supported relative to the rail; a first rod extending lengthwise within the rail along a first rotational axis; a second rod extending lengthwise within the rail along a second rotational axis; a first drive assembly through which the first and second rods extend, the first drive assembly including a first drive component configured to rotationally drive the first rod about the first rotational axis; and a second drive assembly through which the first and second rods extend, the second drive assembly including a second drive component configured to rotationally drive the second rod about, the second rotational axis; wherein: the second rod passes through the first drive assembly without being rotationally driven by the first drive component and the first rod passes through the second drive assembly without being rotationally driven by the second drive component; and rotation of at least one of the first rod or the second rod results in an adjustment of at least a portion of the covering. 2. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein: the second rod is independently rotatable about the second rotational axis relative to both the first drive component and the first rod; and the first rod is independently rotatable about the first rotational axis relative to both the second drive component and the second rod. 3. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first drive assembly further comprises a housing defining an interior within which the first drive component is housed, the first and second rods extending through the interior of the housing along the first and second rotational axes, respectively. 4. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second drive assembly further comprises a housing defining an interior within which the second drive component is housed, the first and second rods extending through the interior of the housing along the first and second rotational axes, respectively. 5. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second drive assemblies comprise spring motors. 6. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein: the rail comprises a first rail and further comprising second and third rails operatively coupled to the rail; with the covering being supported between the second and third rails; the first rod comprises a first lift rod operatively coupled to the second rail via a first lift cord such that rotation of the first lift rod results in movement of the second rail relative to at least one of the first rail or the third rail; and the second rod comprises a second lift rod operatively coupled to the third rail via a second lift cord such that rotation of the second lift rod results in movement of the third rail relative to at least one of the first rail or the second rail. 7. The covering assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first drive assembly further comprises a brake configured to apply a torque against the first rod that resists rotation of the first rod about the first rotational axis without acting on the second rod. 8. A covering assembly for an architectural opening, the covering assembly comprising: a rail; a covering supported relative to the rail; a first rod extending lengthwise within the rail along a first rotational axis; a second rod extending lengthwise within the rail along a second rotational axis; and a first drive assembly through which the first and second rods extend along the first and second rotational axes, respectively, the first drive assembly including a first drive component configured to rotationally drive the first rod about the first rotational axis; wherein: the second rod passes through the first drive assembly without being rotationally driven by the first drive component; and rotation of at least one of the first rod or the second rod results in an adjustment of at least a portion of the covering. 9. The covering assembly of claim 8 , wherein the second rod is independently rotatable about the second rotational axis relative to both the first drive component and the first rod. 10. The covering assembly of claim 8 , wherein the first drive assembly further comprises a housing defining an interior within which the first drive component is housed, the first and second rods extending through the interior of the housing along the first and second rotational axes, respectively. 11. The covering of claim 10 , wherein: the housing defines first and second rod openings along an exterior of the housing that are aligned along the first rotational axis, with the first rod extending along the first rotational axis through the first and second rod openings such that a portion of the first rod extends within the interior of the housing between the first and second rod openings; and the housing further defines first and second pass-through openings along the exterior of the housing that are separate from the first and second rod openings and that are aligned with second rotational axis, the second rod extending along the second rotational axis through the first and second pass-through openings such that a portion of the second rod extends within the interior of the housing between the first and second pass-through openings. 12. The covering assembly of claim 8 , wherein the first drive assembly comprises a spring motor. 13. The covering assembly of claim 8 , wherein: the rail comprises a first rail and further comprising second and third rails operatively coupled to the rail, with the covering being supported between the second and third rails; the first rod comprises a first lift rod operatively coupled to the second rail via a first lift cord such that rotation of the first lift rod results in movement of the second rail relative to at least one of the first rail or the third rail; and the second rod comprises a second lift rod operatively coupled to the third rail via a, second lift cord such that rotation of the second lift rod results in movement of the third rail relative to at least one of the first rail or the second rail. 14. The covering assembly of claim 8 , wherein the first rod comprises a lift rod and the second rod comprises a tilt rod such that rotation of the lift rod causes at least one of retraction or extension of the covering and rotation of the tilt rod results in tilting of the covering. 15. The covering assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a second drive assembly separate from the first drive assembly, the second drive assembly including a second drive component configured to rotationally drive the second rod about the second rotational axis. 16. The covering assembly of claim 15 , wherein the second drive assembly further comprises a housing defining an interior within which the second drive component is housed, the first and second rods extending through the interior of the housing along the first and second rotational axes, respectively. 17. The covering assembly of claim 16 , wherein the first rod passes through the second drive assembly without being rotationally driven by the second drive component. 18. The covering assembly of claim 15 , wherein the first drive assembly comprises a spring motor and the second drive assembly comprises a tilt drive. 19. The covering assembly of claim 15 , wherein the first and second drive assemblies comprise spring motors. 20. The covering assembly of claim 15 , wherein the first rod is independently rotatable about the first rotational a
