Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Vascular filtering devices and methods for their use are disclosed. In some embodiments, the vascular filtering devices include an elongate member having an unsupported membrane bag portion attached thereto. The membrane may be porous in some examples. Multiple elongate extensions may also extend from the membrane, and may extend along the elongate member, such as to a proximal region of the elongate member. The unsupported membrane bag portion may be configured to inflate or otherwise radially expand away from the elongate member as a result of blood flowing through the vessel within which the vascular filtering device is positioned.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A vascular filtration device comprising: an elongate member including a wall and having a length, a first end, a second end, a first end portion adjacent the first end, a second end portion adjacent the second end, and one or more apertures in the wall of the elongate member, each of the one or more apertures being in fluid communication with a lumen within the elongate member; a bag portion positioned along the first end portion of the elongate member, the bag portion being free of any frame or support structure and comprised of a membranous material; a plurality of elongate extensions comprised of the membranous material and attached to the bag portion, the plurality of elongate extensions extending to the second end of the elongate member, each of the plurality of elongate extensions extending through an aperture of the one or more apertures and through the lumen of the elongate member, each of the plurality of elongate extensions exiting the lumen at the second end portion of the elongate member; and wherein the elongate member comprises a solid core, and wherein the lumen is defined by a groove in an exterior surface of the solid core. 2. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the membranous material is porous. 3. The vascular filtration device of claim 2 , wherein the membranous material is operable to permit blood to pass through the membranous material when the vascular filtration device is deployed in a blood vessel of a patient, and is operable to prevent embolic debris form passing through the porous membrane. 4. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of elongate extensions and the bag portion are formed from a single sheet of material. 5. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the membranous material is comprised of ePTFE. 6. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member includes a total number of apertures in the wall of the elongate member equal to a total number of elongate extensions of the plurality of elongate extensions, and where each elongate extension passes through a separate aperture in the wall of the elongate member. 7. The vascular filtration device of claim 6 , wherein the elongate member has three apertures in the wall of the elongate member. 8. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of elongate extensions extend from the bag portion toward the second end portion of the elongate member. 9. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of elongate extensions are spaced approximately equidistantly about a perimeter of the bag portion. 10. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein an application of a force to the plurality of elongate extensions imparts a distributed force about a perimeter of the bag portion. 11. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member comprises a shapeable tip portion. 12. The vascular filtration device of claim 11 , wherein the shapeable tip portion includes a coil. 13. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , further comprising a layer of material over the solid core, wherein the lumen is defined by the layer of material and the groove in the exterior surface of the solid core. 14. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member comprises a guidewire. 15. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate member comprises a hypotube. 16. The vascular filtering device of claim 1 , wherein an application of a proximally directed force to the plurality of elongate extensions causes the bag portion to collapse against an external surface of the elongate member. 17. The vascular filtration device of claim 1 , further comprising a first stop member operable to limit an amount of distal translation of an elongate extension of the plurality of elongate extensions of the bag portion. 18. The vascular filtration device of claim 17 , wherein the first stop member is disposed proximal of the second end portion of the elongate member. 19. The vascular filtration device of claim 17 , wherein the first stop member is disposed proximal of the one or more apertures in the wall of the elongate member. 20. The vascular filtration device of claim 17 , wherein the first stop member comprises a knot in at least one of the elongate extensions of the plurality of elongate extensions of the bag portion. 21. The vascular filtration device of claim 17 , further comprising a second stop member operable to limit an amount of translation of an elongate extension of the plurality of elongate extensions of the bag portion.
