Official abstract text for this publication.
The present disclosure relates to a saw, comprising a drive, a first blade configured to oscillate about an axis perpendicular to a plane defined by a surface of the first blade, a second blade configured to oscillate about an axis perpendicular to the plane in a direction opposite to that of the first blade, and wherein gearing is provided between the drive and the first and second blades to reduce the speed transmitted from the drive to the blades. A saw blade, a connection mechanism for connecting a blade to a saw and associated methods are also provided.

What is claimed: 1. A surgical saw blade configured to cut bone comprising: a cutting edge at a distal end, wherein the cutting edge is elongate along a first axis; an attachment portion at a proximal end of the blade, the attachment portion configured to connect the blade to a saw; and a projection extending from a blade body of the blade and resiliently biased into a position in which the projection extends away from a surface defined by the blade body of the blade, wherein the projection is offset from the cutting edge, and the projection is pivotable relative to each of the blade body and the cutting edge about a pivot axis that is parallel to the first axis. 2. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the projection is positioned towards the proximal end of the blade. 3. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the projection is integral to the blade. 4. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the attachment portion comprises a spanner shaped head. 5. The saw blade of claim 4 , wherein an inner surface of the spanner shaped head is at an angle of between 45° and 75° relative to a plane of the blade. 6. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the attachment portion comprises a pair of substantially parallel arms. 7. The saw blade of claim 6 , wherein an inner surface of the arms is at an angle of between 45° and 75° relative to a plane of the blade. 8. The saw blade of claim 7 , wherein the inner surface is at an angle of 60° relative to the plane of the blade. 9. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a major surface of the saw blade. 10. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the position of the projection is a first position in which the projection extends away from the surface along a transverse direction a first distance, and the projection is configured to be resiliently movable from the first position to a second position in which the projection does not extend away from the surface along the transverse direction or extends away from the surface along the transverse direction a second distance that is less than the first distance. 11. The saw blade of claim 10 , wherein the projection is configured to be resiliently movable from the first position to the second position in which the projection does not extend away from the surface along the transverse direction. 12. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the projection extends from a portion of the blade body that is disposed between the cutting edge and the attachment portion. 13. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the projection extends from the blade body toward the cutting edge. 14. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the blade body defines the cutting edge, the attachment portion, and an elongate portion that extends from the cutting edge to the attachment portion. 15. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the blade body and the projection together form a single monolithic piece. 16. The saw blade of claim 10 , wherein the pivot axis is perpendicular to the transverse direction. 17. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a major surface of the blade body, wherein the major surface defines a plane that is perpendicular to a transverse direction, and wherein the position of the projection is a first position in which the projection extends away from the plane along the transverse direction a first distance, and the projection is configured to be resiliently movable from the first position to a second position in which the projection does not extend away from the plane along the transverse direction or extends away from the plane along the transverse direction a second distance that is less than the first distance. 18. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the cutting edge is elongate along the first axis a first length, wherein the proximal end is spaced from the distal end along a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis, wherein the surface faces in a transverse direction that is perpendicular to the first axis and the second axis, and wherein the distal end has a thickness along the transverse direction that is less than the first length, whereby the pivot axis is perpendicular to the transverse direction. 19. The saw blade of claim 1 , wherein the projection is configured to releasably engage a latching surface of the saw, such that in a first position, the projection engages the latching surface of the saw, and in a second position, the projection disengages from the latching surface of the saw, whereby the projection pivots about the pivot axis between the first position and the second position.
