Official abstract text for this publication.
A stand-alone apparatus for cutting a web of media or tag stock into individual units for use downstream of a printer. The apparatus may cut vinyl, plastic, or RFID stock material in both back and forth directions. The apparatus comprises a housing, a carriage assembly and a movable cutter assembly. The cutter assembly is easily interchangeable and comprises a cutting element such as a wheel blade, and a pressure adjusting element for adjusting the amount of pressure applied by the cutting element to the stock material. Alternatively, the cutter assembly may be manufactured with a predetermined pressure load, but still permit an operator to adjust the depth of cut. The apparatus may be powered by and or in hardline or wireless communication with a printer, or may further comprise a computer microprocessor, memory and user interface to function wholly independent from a printer.

What is claimed is: 1. A cutting apparatus, comprising: a housing comprising an entry port and an exit port; a carriage assembly contained within the housing and mounted to the housing; and a cutter assembly contained within the housing, wherein the cutter assembly comprises a pressure adjusting element contained within the housing, a cutter holder, a fastener, and a plurality of adjusters, wherein the plurality of adjusters and the fastener are configured between the cutter holder and the pressure adjusting element, wherein turning the fastener causes the cutter holder to be repositioned relative to the pressure adjusting element to control a pressure exerted by the cutter assembly on a stock material. 2. The cutting apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a drive element in communication with each of a motor and said cutter assembly. 3. The cutting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the carriage assembly retains the cutter assembly. 4. The cutting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cutter assembly comprises a cutting element. 5. The cutting apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the cutting element is capable of making angled cuts on the stock material, and wherein the cuts are of variable length and width. 6. The cutting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the carriage assembly comprises a screw shaft for moving the cutter assembly. 7. The cutting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the carriage assembly comprises an anvil positioned adjacent to the entry port.
