Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical staple cartridge is disclosed comprising a plurality of staples removably stored within the surgical staple cartridge. The staples comprise staple legs which extend from a staple base portion. The staple legs comprise staple tips configured to pierce tissue and contact a corresponding forming pocket of an anvil of surgical stapling instrument. The staples further comprise zones having different hardnesses.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical stapling device, comprising: an elongate shaft assembly; an end effector pivotally coupled to said elongate shaft about an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is movable between an open and a clamped position, said end effector comprising: an elongate channel; an anvil; and a staple cartridge operably supported in said elongate channel, comprising: a cartridge body, comprising: a deck including a proximal end and a distal end; and staple cavities defined in said deck; bioabsorbable staples removably stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said bioabsorbable staple comprises a frame including a crown and legs extending from said crown, and wherein said frame further comprises a feature configured to increase a hardness of a first portion of said frame relative to a second portion of said frame; staple drivers movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a staple firing stroke to eject said staples from said staple cavities; and a sled movable from a proximal position to a distal position during said staple firing stroke to move said staple drivers from said unfired position to said fired position; and a firing member movable within said end effector during said firing stroke to move said sled from said proximal position to said distal position, wherein said firing member comprises: a first tab configured to engage said elongate channel during said staple firing stroke; and a second tab configured to engage said anvil during said firing motion. 2. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said frame comprises magnesium. 3. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said feature is a treated surface. 4. The surgical stapling device of claim 3 , wherein said treated surface comprises at least one of a coated surface, a laser hardened surface, and a plasma discharge hardened surface. 5. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said crown comprises said feature. 6. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said legs comprise said feature. 7. The surgical stapling device of claim 6 , wherein said legs comprise a leg body portion and corners, and wherein at least one said corner comprises said feature. 8. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said legs comprise a tip, and wherein said tip comprises said feature. 9. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said anvil and said deck are configured to compress tissue when said end effector is in said clamped position, and wherein a distance between said anvil and said deck varies laterally when said anvil is in said clamped position. 10. The surgical stapling device of claim 1 , wherein said staple cavities comprise a first row and a second row, wherein said bioabsorbable staples comprise first staples removably stored in said first row and second staples removably stored in said second row, wherein said first staples are configured to deform to a first fired height when fired against said anvil, and wherein said second staples are configured to deform to a second fired height when fired against said anvil. 11. A surgical stapling device, comprising: an elongate shaft assembly; an end effector pivotally coupled to said elongate shaft about an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is movable between an open and a clamped position, said end effector comprising: an elongate channel; an anvil; and a staple cartridge operably supported in said elongate channel, comprising: a cartridge body, comprising: a deck including a proximal end and a distal end; and staple cavities defined in said deck; bioabsorbable staples removably stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said bioabsorbable staple comprises a frame including a crown and legs extending from said crown, and wherein said frame further comprises a feature configured to control increase or decrease a stiffness of a first portion of said frame relative to a second portion of said frame; staple drivers movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a staple firing stroke to eject said staples from said staple cavities; and a sled movable from a proximal position to a distal position during said staple firing stroke to move said staple drivers from said unfired position to said fired position; and a firing member movable within said end effector during said firing stroke to move said sled from said proximal position to said distal position, wherein said firing member comprises: a first tab configured to engage said elongate channel during said staple firing stroke; and a second tab configured to engage said anvil during said firing motion. 12. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said frame comprises magnesium. 13. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said feature is a rectangular cross-sectional profile configured to increase said stiffness of said first portion of said frame relative to said second portion of said frame. 14. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said feature is a round cross-sectional profile configured to decrease said stiffness of said first portion of said frame relative to said second portion of said frame. 15. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said crown comprises said feature. 16. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said legs comprise said feature. 17. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said feature is a platform extending from said crown, wherein said platform is configured to increase said stiffness of said crown relative to said legs. 18. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said feature is a relief slot in said crown, wherein said relief slot is configured to decrease said stiffness of said crown relative to a remaining portion of said crown. 19. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said anvil and said deck are configured to compress tissue when said end effector is in said close position, and wherein a distance between said anvil and said deck varies laterally when said end effector is in said clamped position. 20. The surgical stapling device of claim 11 , wherein said staple cavities comprise a first row of staple cavities and a second row of staple cavities, wherein said bioabsorbable staples comprise first staples removably stored in said first row and second staples removably stored in said second row, wherein said first staples are configured to deform to a first fired height when fired against said anvil, and wherein said second staples are configured to deform to a second fired height when fired against said anvil.
