Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A residue vision system includes an image acquisition device configured for mounting to a harvesting machine. The image acquisition device is configured to acquire, during operation of the harvesting machine, information regarding a first pass in a field. The first pass is a harvested area of the field. During the operation, the first pass is laterally offset from a second pass in the field. An electronic control unit is in communication with the image acquisition device and with a residue distribution system. The residue distribution system is configured to be coupled to the harvesting machine to distribute residue onto the second pass and onto the first pass. The electronic control unit is configured to analyze the information acquired by the image acquisition device and to adjust a distribution of residue onto the first pass while the harvesting machine is harvesting the second pass.

The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control unit is configured to analyze the information to identify a presence of residue and to identify areas without a presence of residue. 3. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the image acquisition device includes a first camera and a second camera and wherein the information is in the form of a camera image of a portion of the first pass. 4. The residue vision system of claim 3 , wherein the first camera is positionable to view in a first direction laterally relative to the second pass, and wherein the second camera is positionable to view in a second direction laterally relative to the second pass, the first direction opposite the second direction. 5. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the residue vision system is configured such that operation thereof is initiated after the first pass has been harvested. 6. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the information includes residue coverage information and wherein the electronic control unit is configured to analyze wind velocity information and to adjust the distribution of residue based at least in part on the wind velocity information. 7. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control unit is configured to determine a moisture level of residue and to adjust the distribution of residue based at least in part on the moisture level of residue. 8. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control unit is configured to determine a global position of the harvesting machine and to adjust the distribution of residue based at least in part on the global position of the harvesting machine. 9. The residue vision system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic control unit is configured to determine a feed rate of residue entering the residue distribution system and to adjust the distribution of residue based at least in part on the feed rate of residue entering the residue distribution system. 10. A crop harvesting system comprising: a distribution assembly in communication with an electronic control unit, the control unit configured to receive, during a harvesting operation, information from an image acquisition device associated with a first pass traversed by a harvesting machine in a field, wherein the distribution assembly is configured to be carried by the harvesting machine to distribute residue onto the first pass and onto a second pass of the harvesting machine that is laterally offset from the first pass during the operation, and the electronic control unit is configured to analyze the information acquired by the at least one image acquisition device and, in response to the analysis, adjust via the distribution assembly a distribution of residue onto the first pass. 11. A harvesting machine including the crop harvesting system of claim 10 . 12. The harvesting machine of claim 11 , wherein the harvesting machine is configured to traverse the field in a direction of travel, and wherein the image acquisition device is positioned to capture a field of view oblique to the direction of travel. 13. The harvesting machine of claim 11 , wherein the harvesting machine is configured to traverse the field in a direction of travel, and wherein the image acquisition device is positioned to capture a field of view orthogonal to the direction of travel. 14. The harvesting machine of claim 11 , further comprising: a harvesting platform defining a width of the first pass, wherein the electronic control unit is configured to adjust the distribution assembly to maximize residue coverage across a width of the second pass based at least partially on the information. 15. The crop harvesting system of claim 10 , wherein in response to the analysis, the electronic control unit is configured to adjust a chopping assembly to produce a finer chop residue or a coarser chop residue. 16. The crop harvesting system of claim 10 , wherein in response to the analysis, the electronic control unit is configured to adjust the distribution assembly to change a spreading distance of the residue. 17. The crop harvesting system of claim 10 , wherein a guide vane is configured to direct distribution of the residue, and wherein in response to the analysis, the electronic control unit is configured to adjust the guide vane to change a direction of distribution of the residue onto the first pass. 18.
