Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The disclosed electronic smart mat includes a planar surface configured to receive a mobile electronic container configured to store one or more medications, an antenna configured to wirelessly communicate with the mobile electronic container when the mobile electronic container is received over the surface, a communication module configured to communicate with a server, and a processor. The processor is configured to determine a medication content of the mobile electronic container responsive to the mobile electronic container being received over the surface, receive patient data associated with a patient responsive to placement of a mobile computing device associated with the patient over the surface of the electronic mat, and provide, to the server using the communication module, the patient data, and updated medication inventory based on the determined medication content of the mobile electronic container. The electronic mat may form a bottom surface of an enclosure within a dispensing machine.

What is claimed is: 1. An electronic mat, comprising: a planar surface configured to receive a mobile electronic container configured to store one or more medications; an antenna configured to wirelessly communicate with the mobile electronic container when the mobile electronic container is received over the surface; a communication module configured to communicate with a server; and a processor configured to: determine whether a user is authorized to access a dispensing unit upon receipt of a medication request indicating one or more medications; the processor configured to, when the user is authorized: identify a mobile electronic container within the dispensing unit based on the medication request, the mobile electronic container being identified by activating a visual indicator via a display associated with the mobile electronic container; receive an input from the user to access the mobile electronic container; unlock, based on the input, the mobile electronic container by wirelessly unlocking a lid of the mobile electronic container using the electronic mat; determine contents of the mobile electronic container responsive to the mobile electronic container being received over the surface of the electronic mat; receive patient data associated with a patient; and provide, to the server using the communication module, the patient data for association with the patient at the server; verify a transaction associated with the medication request; update a record and a medication inventory in the server based on the transaction and the determined contents of the mobile electronic container; and provide an alert for display to the user when the contents of the mobile electronic container is not verified with a database at the server; and the processor configured to, when the user is not authorized, prevent access to the contents of the mobile electronic container. 2. The electronic mat of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to: determine the contents of the mobile electronic container based on interrogating the mobile electronic container for one or more RFID tags. 3. The electronic mat of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to: recognize the mobile electronic container based on a transmission between an RFID tag of the mobile electronic container and the antenna of the electronic mat when the mobile electronic container is placed over the surface of the electronic mat. 4. The electronic mat of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to: wirelessly unlock a lid of the mobile electronic container responsive to recognizing the mobile electronic container with the electronic mat. 5. The electronic mat of claim 1 , further comprising: a sensor configured to determine a physical property of the mobile electronic container when the mobile electronic container is placed over the surface of the electronic mat, wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the physical property to the server. 6. The electronic mat of claim 5 , wherein the patient data comprises a bodily temperature of the patient, a room temperature associated with the patient, or a cardio- respiratory condition of the patient. 7. The electronic mat of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to: determine the contents of the mobile electronic container using the physical property. 8. The electronic mat of claim 1 , wherein receiving the patient data comprises: receiving, using the antenna, patient identification data associated with the patient when the patient is in proximity to the electronic mat. 9. The electronic mat of claim 1 , wherein providing the patient data comprises: providing and updating medication information about the patient responsive to the a mobile computing device being placed over the surface of the electronic mat, the mobile computing device being associated with a medical professional associated with the patient. 10. The electronic mat of claim 9 , wherein the patient data is received responsive to placement of a mobile computing device associated with a clinician over the surface of the electronic mat. 11. The electronic mat of claim 1 , further comprising: a charging device configured to wirelessly provide power to the mobile electronic container while the mobile electronic container is received over the surface. 12. A dispensing system, comprising: a planar electronic mat comprising an antenna and a communication module, the electronic mat being configured to receive a mobile electronic container configured to store one or more medications; a dispensing unit comprising one or more enclosures securing a storage location, wherein the electronic mat forms a surface of a respective enclosure; and a processor configured to: determine whether a user is authorized to access the dispensing unit upon receipt of a medication request indicating one or more medications; and when the user is authorized: identify a selected electronic container within the dispensing unit based on the medication request, the selected electronic container being identified by activating a visual indicator via a display associated with the selected electronic container; receive an input from the user to access the selected electronic container; unlock, based on the input, the selected electronic container by wirelessly unlocking a lid of the selected electronic container using the electronic mat; determine, using an antenna of the electronic mat, contents of the selected electronic container based on the selected electronic container being placed over a surface of the electronic mat; receive patient data associated with a patient; provide, to a server using the communication module, the patient data for association with the patient at the server; verify a transaction associated with the medication request; update a record and a medication inventory in the server based on the transaction and the determined contents of the selected electronic container; and provide an alert for display to the user when contents of the selected electronic container is not verified with a database at the server; and when the user is not authorized, prevent access to the contents of the selected electronic container. 13. The dispensing system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to: determine, using the electronic mat, the contents of the selected electronic container based on interrogating the selected electronic container for one or more RFID tags. 14. The dispensing system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to: recognize the selected electronic container based on a transmission between an RFID tag of the selected electronic container and the antenna of the electronic mat when the selected electronic container is placed over the surface of the electronic mat. 15. The dispensing system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to: wirelessly unlock, using the antenna of the electronic mat, a lid of the selected electronic container responsive to recognizing the selected electronic container with the electronic mat. 16. The dispensing system of claim 12 , further comprising: a sensor configured to determine a physical property of the selected electronic container when the selected electronic container is placed over the surface of the electronic mat, wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the physical property to the server. 17. The dispensing system of claim 16 , wherein the patient data comprises a bodily temperature of the p
