An automated pre-analytical processing method and an apparatus for pre-analytical processing of samples to be forwarded to an adjacent analyzer for analysis. Rack label information is read and communicated to a processor. From the rack label information, the processor determines where to route the rack. The pre-analytical system has a rack robot that conveys racks to discrete locations depending upon the routing information assigned to the rack by the processor. The pre-analytical system has an automated station that reads the labels of individual sample containers in the rack that are brought to the automated station on instructions from the processor. Depending on the type of sample container and the type of sample disposed therein, the samples are either prepared for analysis by the automated station or the sample containers are directly passed through the automated station. Prepared samples and passed through samples are passed individually to a batching rack.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for pre-analytical processing of a biological sample for analysis, the method comprising: receiving, at a port of an automated system for pre-analytical processing, a first rack carrying a first plurality of sample containers, wherein each one of the first plurality of sample containers carries a primary biological sample therein; interrogating a label on the first rack for information about at least one of the rack type, the one or more types of sample containers carried by the first rack, or both; communicating the rack label information to a processor that, based on the rack label information type or the type of sample containers carried by the first rack, assigns a processing order for the pre-analytical processing to the first rack for the primary biological samples in the sample containers disposed in the first rack, wherein the first rack is placed in a processing queue based on the assigned processing order; transporting, with a rack elevator robot system, the first rack from the port to one of a plurality of compartments of a rack storage unit, wherein the port and the compartments of the rack storage unit are positioned at different vertical heights; transporting, with the rack elevator robot system, the first rack from the rack storage unit to an automated station in accordance with the processing queue, wherein the automated station is capable of automatically preparing the primary biological samples for analysis; transporting, with the rack elevator robot system, a second rack carrying a second plurality of sample containers from a destination location of the automated station to one of the compartments of the rack storage unit, wherein each one of the second plurality of sample containers carries a primary or secondary biological sample therein; and transporting, with the rack elevator robot system, the second rack from the rack storage unit to a batching area in accordance with the processing queue. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising: associating a plurality of the sample containers in the second rack as a batch based on a requested analysis for the primary or secondary biological sample in the associated plurality sample containers, wherein the requested analysis for each primary or secondary biological sample in the batch causes the batch to be transported to an automated analyzer associated with the automated system for pre-analytical processing; removing individual sample containers from the second rack; reading label information on the removed sample containers; placing each removed sample container into a receptacle in an array of receptacles in the batching area; communicating the location of each sample container placed in the array of receptacles to the processor; based on a communication between the automated system and the automated analyzer, determining when the batch of sample containers can be received by the automated analyzer for analysis; removing one or more of the associated plurality of sample containers from the array of receptacles and placing the one or more of the associated plurality of sample containers in a common shuttle according to the batch; and transporting the common shuttle from the automated system to the automated analyzer. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein each one of the associated plurality of sample containers in the batch is transported to the automated analyzer either simultaneously or sequentially. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each one of the first plurality of sample containers is a first type of sample container or a second type of sample container, wherein the first type of sample container cannot be passed through the automated station for handling by the automated system and the second type of sample container can be passed through the automated station and be directly handled by the automated system, and wherein: i) if the first rack contains the first type of sample container that cannot be directly handled by the automated system, then: removing each first type of sample container in the first rack; reading identifying information on the first type of sample container; communicating the identifying information to the processor that, based on the identifying information, determines pre-ordered analytical assay information for the primary biological sample in the first type of sample container; providing an empty secondary sample container of a third type that can be handled by the automated system, wherein the third type of sample container can be the same as or different from the second type of sample container; associating the identifying information on the first type of sample container with identifying information on the provided third type of sample container; obtaining a predetermined aliquot of the primary biological sample from the first type of sample container and dispensing the predetermined aliquot of the obtained primary biological sample into the provided third type of sample container; dispensing a predetermined aliquot of diluent into the provided third type of sample container thereby preparing a secondary biological sample; placing the third type of sample container carrying the secondary biological sample into one or more racks at the destination location, wherein the one or more racks at the destination location comprise the second rack; ii) if the first rack contains the second type of sample container that can be directly handled by the automated system, then: removing each second type of sample container in the first rack; reading identifying information on the second type of sample container; communicating the identifying information to the processor that, from the identifying information, determines pre-ordered analytical assay information for the primary biological sample that determines at least the pre-analytical processing for the second type of sample container; and placing the second type of sample container into the one or more racks at the destination location. 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising: associating a plurality of the sample containers in the second rack as a batch; removing individual sample containers from the second rack; reading label information on the removed sample containers; placing each removed sample container into a receptacle in an array of receptacles in the batching area; communicating the location of each sample container placed in the array of receptacles to the processor; based on a communication between the automated system and an automated analyzer, determining when the batch of sample containers can be received by the automated analyzer for analysis; removing one or more of the associated plurality of sample containers from the array of receptacles and placing the one or more of the associated plurality of sample containers in a common shuttle according to the batch; and transporting the common shuttle from the automated system to the automated analyzer. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of dispensing the predetermined aliquot of the obtained primary biological sample into the provided third type of sample container is performed using one of a diluent dispenser or an automated pipettor. 7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of dispensing the predetermined aliquot of diluent into the provided third type of sample container is performed using one of a diluent dispenser or an automated pipettor. 8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of providing the empty secondary sample container of the third type is performed by the rack elevator robot system. 9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of placing the third type of sample container carrying the secondary biological sample into the one o
