Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A ventilated prosthetic socket includes a rigid, structural and load-bearing socket body forming an inner volume adapted to receive a residual limb, and a wall thickness extending from an inner wall surface bordering the inner volume to an outer wall surface. The socket body defines an opening extending through the wall thickness. At least one vent element communicates the inner wall surface to the outer wall surface and extending therebetween in the opening along the socket body to thereby permit a transfer of air from the inner volume to outside of the socket through the opening. The at least one vent element is separately formed from the socket body and discretely insertable into the opening and secured against the inner surface and the outer wall surface. A method and kit are provided to adapt the socket in a ventilated form.

The invention claimed is: 1. A prosthetic socket comprising: a rigid, structural and load-bearing socket body in a form of a closed-ended cup defining an open-ended proximal end area and a closed-end distal end area, the socket body forming an inner volume adapted to receive a residual limb, the socket body defining a wall thickness from an inner wall surface bordering the inner volume to an outer wall surface, the socket body forming an opening extending through the wall thickness; at least one vent element communicating the inner wall surface to the outer wall surface and extending therebetween in the opening along the socket body to thereby permit a transfer of air from the inner volume to outside of the prosthetic socket through the opening, the at least one vent element spanning across the wall thickness from the inner wall surface to the outer wall surface; wherein the at least one vent element is separately formed from the socket body and discretely insertable into the opening and secured against the inner wall surface and the outer wall surface; wherein the at least one vent element includes an exterior part and an interior part securable to one another within the opening and adapted to extend over adjacent portions of the inner and outer wall surfaces of the socket body, respectively, the interior part having a first locking element extending into the opening toward the outer wall surface and spaced apart from a periphery of the opening, and the exterior part having a second locking element extending into the opening toward the inner wall surface and spaced apart from the periphery of the opening, the first locking element locking with the second locking element within a thickness defined by the wall thickness within the opening; wherein the exterior part has a saddle, or hyperbolic paraboloid shape such that the exterior part tracks a geometric shape of the outer wall surface; wherein a surface of the exterior part coupling to with the interior part defines a concavely curved portion along a first cross-sectional line bisecting the exterior part defines a convexly curved portion along a second cross-sectional line perpendicular extending in a same direction to the first cross-sectional line, the concavely curved portion of the exterior part tracks a horizontal geometric cylindrical curvature of the outer wall surface while the convexly curved portion of the exterior part tracks a vertical geometric shape of the outer wall surface; wherein the at least one vent element includes a plurality of vent elements; wherein the interior part includes a cylinder secured to a boss defined by the exterior part by a snap connection with cooperating prongs, the cylinder and the boss are defined along a central axis of the at least one vent element, the cylinder has a height corresponding to the wall thickness; wherein the interior part defines a circumferential rim protruding towards the exterior part to engage therewith and concentric with the cylinder, the circumferential rim fitting against an inner periphery of and within the opening, wherein the circumferential rim is radially spaced a predetermined distance from the cylinder and central axis; wherein each of the interior part and the exterior part defines a rigid ventilated structure permitting a transfer of air from the inner volume to outside the socket body, the ventilated structure is formed by a grid structure defining a plurality interstices. 2. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vent element includes a plurality of vent elements. 3. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of vent elements extend in a circumferential configuration about an axis of the socket body. 4. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vent element includes a first row of sequentially spaced individual vent elements extending about a circumference of the socket body about an axis of the socket body. 5. The prosthetic socket of claim 4 , wherein the at least one vent element includes a second row of sequentially spaced individual vent elements staggered circumferentially about the axis relative to the first row of vent elements. 6. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vent element extends between the proximal end area and the distal end area. 7. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vent element is located proximally above a seal region extending circumferentially about the inner wall surface of the socket body distally of the at least one vent element. 8. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vent element includes a ventilated structure permitting a transfer of air from the inner volume to outside the socket body. 9. The prosthetic socket of claim 8 , wherein the at least one vent element defines a flanged rim extending about a periphery thereof and about an adjacent segment of the outer wall surface of the socket body, the flanged rim surrounding the ventilated structure. 10. The prosthetic socket of claim 8 , wherein the ventilated structure defines a plurality of apertures communicating with the inner volume to outside of the socket body. 11. The prosthetic socket of claim 8 , wherein the ventilated structure is centrally located about an axis of the vent element; wherein the vent element generally defines a circular profile about the axis. 12. The prosthetic socket of claim 1 , wherein the rigid ventilated structure of the interior part spans the predetermined distance between the rim and the cylinder. 13. A vent element for securing to a prosthetic socket forming at least one opening and a wall thickness, the at least one opening having an internal periphery defined by the wall thickness between inner and outer wall surfaces, the vent element comprising: interior and exterior parts defining inner and outer flanged rims, respectively, corresponding to the inner wall surface and the outer wall surface, respectively, wherein the interior part includes a first locking element in the form of a cylinder secured to a second locking element in the form of a boss defined by the exterior part by a snap connection with cooperating prongs, the cylinder and the boss are defined along a central axis of the vent element, the cylinder has a height corresponding to the wall thickness, wherein the inner and outer flanged rims extend from the first and second locking elements, respectively; wherein the interior and exterior parts each define a rigid ventilated structure formed as a grid with interstices arranged to permit a flow of air through the interior and exterior parts, the interior part having a circumferential rim concentric to the cylinder and adapted to extend snugly and flush against the periphery of the opening and engage the exterior part, wherein the circumferential rim is radially spaced a predetermined distance from the cylinder and central axis; wherein the circumferential rim is radially spaced a predetermined distance from the cylinder and the rigid ventilated structure of the interior part spans the predetermined distance between the circumferential rim and the cylinder; wherein the ventilated structure of the interior part is spaced apart from the ventilated structure of the exterior part by a clearance or height when the interior and exterior parts are locked to one another wherein the exterior part has a saddle, or hyperbolic paraboloid shape such that the exterior part to tracks a geometric shape of the outer wall surface; wherein a surface of the exterior part coupling to with the interior part defines a concavely curved portion along a first cross-sectional line bisecting the exterior par
