Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Delivery devices and device elements that provide steering capabilities and methods of steering such delivery devices during the delivery of a stented prosthesis to a target site. Various delivery devices include a shaft assembly having a plurality of lumens through which tension members that compressively retain the stented prosthesis to the shaft assembly are routed. By selectively tensioning one or more tension members, the shaft assembly can be pulled or steered in a desired direction. Various embodiments include one or more steering or stiffening rods that can reinforce the device or counteract any unintended bending or steering of the delivery device.

What is claimed is: 1. A delivery device comprising: a stented prosthesis; a shaft assembly configured to retain the stented prosthesis, the shaft assembly including at least one lumen; and at least one tension member extending through the lumen and securing the stent prosthesis to the shaft assembly, wherein the at least one tension member is wrapped circumferentially around the stented prosthesis, wherein tension in the at least one tension member can be varied to correspondingly vary compression of the stented prosthesis, and wherein the at least one tension member can be further tensioned to steer the shaft assembly. 2. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a plurality of lumens that are asymmetrically positioned with respect to a central axis of the shaft assembly. 3. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a plurality of exterior lumens generally surrounding a central lumen. 4. The delivery device of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of exterior lumens are equally sized and symmetrically positioned about the central lumen. 5. The delivery device of claim 1 , Wherein the shaft assembly comprises a first lumen and a second lumen and the delivery device further comprises a first steering rod which can be inserted into the first lumen to straighten the shaft assembly. 6. The delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the first steering rod defines a plurality of radially extending supports. 7. The delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the delivery device further comprises a guide wire positioned at least partially within one of the first or second lumens of the shaft assembly. 8. The delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the first steering rod and the first lumen are collectively configured to prevent proximal movement of the first steeling rod within the first lumen. 9. The delivery device of claim 5 , further comprising a second steering rod positioned within the second lumen. 10. The delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the first steeling rod includes at least one conical protrusion. 11. The delivery device of claim 10 , wherein the first lumen defines at least one ridge that interfaces with the at least one conical protrusion. 12. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein steering of the shaft assembly is controlled with a motor. 13. The delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tension member includes a plurality of tension members symmetrically positioned within a plurality of lumens of the shaft assembly. 14. The delivery device of claim 1 , further comprising, a release pin releasably secured to the at least one tension member, wherein the release pin is configured such that proximal movement of the release pin will release the at least one tension member from the release pin. 15. A delivery device comprising: a stented prosthesis; a shaft assembly configured to retain the stented prosthesis, the shaft assembly including at least one lumen comprising a first lumen and a second lumen; a first steering rod which can be inserted into the first lumen to straighten the shaft assembly, wherein the first steering rod and the first lumen are collectively configured to prevent proximal movement of the first steering rod within the first lumen; and at least one tension member extending through the at least one lumen and securing the stented prosthesis to the shaft assembly, wherein tension in the at least one tension member can be varied to correspondingly vary compression of the stented prosthesis, and wherein the at least one tension member can be further tensioned to steer the shaft assembly. 16. A delivery device comprising: a stented prosthesis; a shaft assembly configured to retain the stented prosthesis, the shaft assembly including at least one lumen comprising a first lumen and a second lumen; a first steering rod which can be inserted into the first lumen to straighten the shaft assembly, wherein the first steering rod includes at least one conical protrusion; and at least one tension member extending through the at least one lumen and securing the stented prosthesis to the shaft assembly, wherein tension in the at least one tension member can be varied to correspondingly vary compression of the stented prosthesis, and wherein the at least one tension member can be further tensioned to steer the shaft assembly. 17. A delivery device comprising: a stented prosthesis; a shaft assembly configured to retain the stented prosthesis, the shaft assembly including at least one lumen; at least one tension member extending through the lumen and securing the stented prosthesis to the shaft assembly, wherein tension in the at least one tension member can be varied to correspondingly vary compression of the stented prosthesis, and wherein the at least one tension member can be further tensioned to steer the shaft assembly; and a release pin releasably secured to the at least one tension member, wherein the release pin is configured such that proximal movement of the release pin will release the at least one tension member from the release pin. 18. The delivery device of claim 17 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a plurality of lumens that are asymmetrically positioned with respect to a central axis of the shaft assembly. 19. The delivery device of claim 17 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a plurality of exterior lumens generally surrounding a central lumen. 20. The delivery device of claim 19 , the plurality of exterior lumens are equally sized and symmetrically positioned about the central lumen.
