Official abstract text for this publication.
A color electrophoretic display with distinct switching areas formed by a segmented top plane electrode opposite driving pixel electrodes. The distinct areas are programmed to switch at different times, thereby reducing the “flashiness” seen by a viewer during an image update. In one embodiment, the color electrophoretic medium of the display includes a reflective white particle and three other sets of particles, each comprising a different subtractive color.

The invention claimed is: 1. A color electrophoretic display having a plurality of distinct switching areas, the color electrophoretic display comprising: a single active matrix backplane including driving pixel electrodes coupled to thin film transistors (TFTs); a segmented top plane electrode opposite the driving pixel electrodes, wherein different portions of the segmented top electrode create distinct switching areas across the single active matrix backplane; and a color electrophoretic medium disposed between the driving pixel electrodes and the segmented top plane electrode, wherein the color electrophoretic medium includes a set of charged reflective white particles and three additional sets of charged particles, wherein each of the three additional sets comprises a different subtractive color, and wherein the set of charged reflective white particle and three additional sets of charged particles move between the single active matrix backplane and the segmented top plane electrodes when an electric field is provided between the single active matrix backplane and the segmented top plane electrodes. 2. The color electrophoretic display of claim 1 , wherein the segmented top electrode segregates the color electrophoretic display into blocks of driving pixels that switch at different times. 3. The color electrophoretic display of claim 1 , wherein the segmented top electrode segregates the color electrophoretic display into interdigitated portions of driving pixels that switch at different times.
