Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump includes a first ring having an upstream face and an inner surface cooperatively forming an edge and a second ring having a downstream face configured to engage the upstream face of the first ring and urge the edge of the first ring inwards so that the edge of the first ring is positioned inwardly beyond the second ring.

The invention claimed is: 1. An annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump, comprising: a first ring including an upstream face and an inner surface cooperatively forming an edge; and a second ring including a downstream face configured to engage the upstream face of the first ring, wherein the upstream face of the first ring is configured to extend away from the downstream face at an interior angle, and engagement of the downstream face with the upstream face is configured to reduce the interior angle between the upstream face and the downstream face. 2. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the upstream face and the inner surface extend at an obtuse interior angle relative to one another. 3. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the upstream face of the first ring comprises a scraping section extending away from the downstream face of the second ring, the inner surface comprises a tapered section, and the scraping section and the tapered section extend from one another to cooperatively form the edge. 4. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 3 , wherein the upstream face of the first ring comprises: a planar section extending from the scraping section; and a skew section extending from the planar section and away from the second ring. 5. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 4 , wherein the downstream face of the second ring comprises: an additional planar section configured to engage the planar section of the first ring; and an additional skew section extending from the additional planar section, wherein the additional skew section is configured to engage the skew section of the first ring. 6. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 5 , wherein the additional planar section of the second ring is configured to engage at least a portion of the scraping section of the first ring. 7. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first ring is composed of a resilient material such that engagement between the first ring and the second ring radially expands the first ring and moves the edge of the first ring farther inward. 8. An annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump, comprising: a first ring including: a first planar section; a first skew section extending from a first end of the first planar section; a scraping section extending from a second end of the first planar section; and a tapered section extending from the scraping section to form an edge with the scraping section; and a second ring including: a second planar section configured to engage the first planar section of the first ring; and a second skew section extending from the second planar section and toward the first ring, wherein the second skew section is configured to engage the first skew section of the first ring. 9. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 8 , wherein the first ring comprises a first arcuate section extending from the first skew section, the second ring comprises a second arcuate section extending from the second skew section, and the second arcuate section is configured to engage the first arcuate section. 10. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 8 , wherein the edge of the first ring is positioned inwardly beyond the second ring. 11. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 8 , wherein engagement between the first ring and the second ring transitions the first ring from an uncompressed configuration to a compressed configuration, the first planar section is oriented at a first interior angle with respect to the scraping section in the uncompressed configuration, the first planar section is oriented at a second interior angle with respect to the scraping section in the compressed configuration, and the second interior angle is less than the first interior angle. 12. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 11 , wherein the scraping section is oriented at a third interior angle with respect to the tapered section in the uncompressed configuration, the scraping section is oriented at a fourth interior angle with respect to the tapered section in the compressed configuration, and the fourth interior angle is less than the third interior angle. 13. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 8 , wherein the scraping section and the tapered section are oriented at an acute interior angle relative to one another. 14. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 8 , wherein the second ring comprises a planar upstream surface disposed opposite the second planar section and the second skew section. 15. The annular scraper ring assembly of claim 14 , comprising a third ring that includes a planar downstream surface configured to engage the planar upstream surface of the second ring. 16. A scraper ring of an annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump, comprising: a tapered section facing the plunger of the reciprocating pump; an exterior section facing away from the plunger; a first section; a second section extending from a first end of the first section in a downstream direction of the scraper ring and toward the exterior section; and a third section extending from a second end of the first section at an oblique interior angle in the downstream direction and toward the tapered section, wherein the third section and the tapered section cooperatively form an edge of the scraper ring. 17. The scraper ring of claim 16 , wherein the third section and the tapered section are oriented at an obtuse interior angle relative to one another. 18. The scraper ring of claim 16 , comprising an arcuate section extending from the second section to the exterior section. 19. The scraper ring of claim 16 , wherein the second section extends and the third section extend from the first section at respective obtuse interior angles. 20. The scraper ring of claim 16 , wherein the scraper ring is composed of a resilient material such that compression of the scraper ring in the downstream direction causes movement of the edge farther inward toward the plunger of the reciprocating pump. 21. An annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump, comprising: a first ring including an upstream face and an inner surface cooperatively forming an edge, wherein the upstream face comprises a scraping section, the inner surface comprises a tapered section, and the scraping section and the tapered section extend from one another to cooperatively form the edge; and a second ring including a downstream face configured to engage the upstream face of the first ring and urge the edge of the first ring inwards so that the edge of the first ring is positioned inwardly beyond the second ring, wherein the scraping section extends away from the second ring. 22. A scraper ring of an annular scraper ring assembly for a packing arrangement that can form a seal with a plunger included in a fluid end of a reciprocating pump, comprising: a tapered section facing the plunger of the reciprocating pump; an exterior section facing away from the plunger; a first section; a second section extending from a first end of the first section in a downstream direction of the scraper ring and toward th
