Aspects of the technology provide a multi-purpose card reader configured for use with a mobile electronic device (e.g., a mobile host), such as a smart phone or tablet computer. In certain aspects, the card reader is integrated into a case for enclosing the mobile electronic device and configured for reading financial information from a payment card to facilitate a financial transaction between a buyer and a merchant. To facilitate operability of the card reader, the case can include multiple card slots, such as a swipe-slot (e.g., for receiving a magnetic stripe payment card), and a dip-slot (e.g., for use in receiving an IC type payment card).

What is claimed is: 1. A apparatus for reading payment information, the apparatus comprising: a housing; a slot in the housing, wherein the slot includes a surface; and reader circuitry at least partially disposed along the surface of the slot, wherein the reader circuitry is configured to read information from a payment card while the payment card interacts with the reader circuitry, wherein at least a portion of the reader circuitry is configured to displace from a first position while the payment card interacts with the reader circuitry. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least the portion of the reader circuitry is configured to temporarily displace from the first position while the payment card interacts with the reader circuitry and return to the first position after the payment card interacts with the reader circuitry. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a controller, wherein the controller detects that the payment card is at least partially within the slot based on identifying that at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 4. An apparatus, the apparatus comprising: a surface; and reader circuitry at least partially disposed along the surface, wherein the reader circuitry is configured to read information from a payment object while the payment object interacts with the reader circuitry, wherein at least a portion of the reader circuitry is configured to displace from a first position while the payment object interacts with the reader circuitry. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the surface is an interior surface of a slot in a housing of the apparatus. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein displacement of at least the portion of the reader circuitry from the first position permits passage of the payment object into the slot. 7. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a printed circuit board (PCB), wherein the reader circuitry is at least partially disposed on the PCB. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the PCB includes the surface. 9. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein at least the portion of the reader circuitry is configured to temporarily displace from the first position while the payment object interacts with the reader circuitry and return to the first position after the payment object interacts with the reader circuitry. 10. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein displacement of at least the portion of the reader circuitry from the first position includes displacement of at least the portion of the reader circuitry to a second position. 11. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the reader circuitry includes magnetic stripe reader circuitry that reads the information from a magnetic stripe of the payment object. 12. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the reader circuitry includes integrated circuit chip reader circuitry that reads the information from an integrated circuit chip of the payment object. 13. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the reader circuitry includes a first wireless device that reads the information from a second wireless device of the payment object. 14. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein at least the portion of the reader circuitry is configured to at least partially obstruct a slot in a housing of the apparatus while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the surface is an interior surface of a second slot in the housing of the apparatus, wherein the slot and the second slot are parallel. 16. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising: a controller, wherein the controller detects the payment object based on identifying that at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 17. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising: a power interface that is configured to provide power to the reader circuitry while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 18. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising: tamper detection circuitry that is configured to monitor the reader circuitry for tamper detection while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 19. The apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising: tamper detection circuitry coupled to the reader circuitry, wherein displacement of at least the portion of the reader circuitry from the first position also causes displacement of at least a portion of the tamper detection circuitry. 20. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the apparatus is a payment object reader device. 21. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the apparatus is a mobile handset. 22. A method comprising: reading information from a payment object while the payment object interacts with reader circuitry, wherein the reader circuitry is at least partially disposed along a surface; and cause at least a portion of the reader circuitry to displace from a first position while the payment object interacts with the reader circuitry. 23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising: detecting the payment object based on identifying that at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 24. The method of claim 22 , further comprising: providing power to the reader circuitry while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 25. The method of claim 22 , further comprising: monitoring the reader circuitry for tamper detection using tamper detection circuitry while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position. 26. The method of claim 22 , further comprising: obstructing a slot in a housing while at least the portion of the reader circuitry is displaced from the first position, wherein the housing includes the reader circuitry and the surface.
