Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle transmission using a gearset. Multi-mode clutches selectively couple components of the gearset. The transmission operates in and shifts between a first forward gear and a second forward gear using a change in input rotation. An electric motor coupled to the input may be used to change the input rotation direction.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle drive system comprising: a gearset having a first forward speed and a second forward speed; an electric motor, the electric motor operable in a first direction and a second direction wherein operating the electric motor in the first direction operates the gearset at the first forward speed and operating the electric motor in the second direction operates the gearset at the second forward speed; the gearset having a first planetary gearset and a second planetary gearset; and a first clutch and a second clutch, the first clutch selectively couples a component of the first planetary gearset to a stationary member, and the second clutch selectively couples a component of the second planetary gearset to the stationary member. 2. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the first clutch is a multi-mode clutch having four modes; and the second clutch is a multi-mode clutch having four modes. 3. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the component of the first planetary gearset is a ring of the first planetary gearset; and the component of the second planetary gearset is a planet carrier of the second planetary gearset. 4. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 including an output, the output connected to a planet carrier of the first planetary gearset; and a ring gear of the second planetary gearset connected to the planet carrier of the first planetary gearset. 5. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the first clutch is a multi-mode clutch; and the second clutch is a multi-mode clutch. 6. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the first clutch has one or more modes; and the second clutch has one or more modes. 7. The vehicle drive system of claim 1 wherein the first clutch includes at least one selectable one-way clutch enabling selection of different modes; and the second clutch includes at least one selectable one-way clutch enabling selection of different modes. 8. A vehicle drive system comprising: a motor operable in a first direction and a second direction; a transmission including a housing, an input, and an output, the input connected to the motor; a gearset, the gearset including a first planetary gearset connected to the input and a second planetary gearset connected to the input; a first clutch selectively coupling the first planetary gearset to the housing; a second clutch selectively coupling the second planetary gearset to the housing; and the gearset connects to the output, wherein the gearset has a first forward speed and a second forward speed, the gearset operating in the first forward speed when the motor operates in the first direction of rotation and operates in the second forward speed when the motor operates in the second direction of rotation. 9. The vehicle drive system of claim 8 wherein the first clutch selectively couples a ring of the first planetary gearset to the housing; and the second clutch selectively couples a planet gear carrier of the second planetary gearset to the housing. 10. The vehicle drive system of claim 9 wherein the first clutch has four modes and the second clutch has four modes. 11. The vehicle drive system of claim 8 wherein direction of motor operation determines a selective coupling of the first clutch and the second clutch. 12. The vehicle drive system of claim 8 wherein the first clutch is a multi-mode clutch; and the second clutch is a multi-mode clutch. 13. The vehicle drive system of claim 8 wherein the first clutch has one or more modes; and the second clutch has one or more modes. 14. The vehicle drive system of claim 8 wherein the first clutch includes at least one selectable one-way clutch enabling selection of different modes; and the second clutch includes at least one selectable one-way clutch enabling selection of different modes. 15. A transmission comprising: an input rotatable in a first direction and a second direction; an output rotatable in a first direction and a second direction; a housing, the housing stationary relative to the input and the output; a first planetary gearset including a planet gear, a planet gear carrier, a ring gear, and a sun gear; a second planetary gearset including a planet gear, a planet gear carrier, a ring gear, and a sun gear; a first clutch selectively coupling the ring gear of the first planetary gearset to the housing; a second clutch selectively coupling a component the planet gear carrier of the second planetary gearset to the housing; and the transmission operates in a first gear when the input rotates in the first direction and operates in a second gear when the input rotates in the second direction. 16. The transmission of claim 15 wherein the sun gear of the first planetary gearset and the sun gear of the second planetary gearset are connected to the input and the planet gear carrier of the first planetary gearset is connected to the output. 17. The transmission of claim 15 wherein the sun gear of the first planetary gearset and the sun gear of the second planetary gearset are connected to the output and the planet gear carrier of the first planetary gearset is connected to the input. 18. The transmission of claim 15 wherein a change in input rotation direction shifts the transmission between the first gear and the second gear. 19. The transmission of claim 15 wherein the transmission has a first forward speed associated with the first gear and a second forward speed associated with the second gear, the transmission operating in the first forward speed and the second forward speed based on the rotation direction of the input and a selective coupling of the first clutch and the second clutch.
