A container for a foodstuff or beverage preparation machine, the container for containing beverage or foodstuff material and including a code encoding preparation information. The code has a reference portion and a data portion, the reference portion including an arrangement of at least two reference units defining a reference line r, the data portion including a plurality of adjacent sectors arranged on an encoding line D. Each sector is bounded by a first circumferential position and a second circumferential position on the encoding line D, and each sector contains a data unit arranged on the encoding line D between the first and second circumferential positions. The data unit is arranged a distance d extending from the first circumferential position as a variable to at least partially encode a parameter of the preparation information, whereby the encoding line D is circular and is arranged with a tangent thereto orthogonal the reference line r at an intersection point.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of preparing a beverage or foodstuff, the method comprising: obtaining a digital image of a code associated with a container comprising beverage or foodstuff material, the code encoding preparation information; processing said digital image to decode the encoded preparation information by: locating reference and data units of the code; determining from the reference units a reference line r; determining, for a plurality of sectors arranged on a circular encoding line relative the reference line, a circumferential distance of a data unit along the encoding line from a circumferential position on the encoding line; converting the determined distance into an actual value of a parameter using a stored relationship between the parameter and distance; and controlling a preparation process, in which a preparing a beverage or foodstuff is prepared, using said decoded preparation information. 2. The method of claim 1 , comprising: decoding the encoded preparation information by decoding a distinct parameter of the preparation information with each sector. 3. The method of claim 1 , comprising: determining the circumferential distance of a data unit along the encoding line from the circumferential position as any continuous distance from said circumferential position. 4. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining the circumferential distance for a data unit for sectors arranged on more than one circular encoding line. 5. The method of claim 4 , comprising determining the circumferential distance for a data unit for sectors arranged on more than one circular encoding line which are concentrically arranged. 6. The method of claim 1 , comprising reading the code within a length of 600-1600 μm. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the container is arranged as: a capsule; a packet; a receptacle for end user consumption of the beverage or foodstuff therefrom; or a collapsible container. 8. The method of claim 1 , comprising: reading the code from an attachment or from a surface of the container.
