What is claimed is: 1. A curable composition configured to be applied in direct contact with a layer comprising a first polymeric resin, the curable composition comprising: a second polymeric resin; and a crosslinking/curing agent for the second polymeric resin, wherein the crosslinking/curing agent comprises a polymerization reaction product of a methylene dicarbonyl compound, a multifunctional form thereof, or a combination of any thereof. 2. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the methylene dicarbonyl compound comprises a dialkyl methylene malonate, a diaryl methylene malonate, a diethyl methylene malonate, or a combination thereof. 3. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the curable composition, when cured, comprises a polymerization reaction product of diethyl methylene malonate and a multifunctional form of diethyl methylene malonate. 4. The curable composition of claim 3 , wherein the multifunctional form of diethyl methylene malonate comprises a transesterification adduct of diethyl methylene malonate and at least one polyol. 5. The curable composition of claim 4 , wherein the polyol comprises a diol. 6. The curable composition of claim 5 , wherein the diol comprises 1,5-pentane diol and/or 1,6-hexanediol. 7. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the layer comprises an activator compound that activates polymerization reactions in the curable composition when the curable composition is applied in contact with the layer. 8. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the curable composition comprises a thermoset resin comprising acrylic resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin, polyurea resin, polyether resin, polythioether resin, polycarbonate resin, polycarbamate resin, epoxy resin, phenolic resin, or aminoplast resin, or a combination of any thereof. 9. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the curable composition is applied directly onto a metallic substrate. 10. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the curable composition is applied directly onto a non-metallic substrate. 11. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the layer is an electrodeposited layer. 12. The curable composition of claim 1 , wherein the curable composition further comprises an extender. 13. An article comprising a substrate and the curable composition of claim 1 deposited over the substrate and cured to form a cured layer. 14. The article of claim 13 , wherein the article comprises a vehicle component or a free-standing structure. 15. The article of claim 13 , wherein the cured layer comprises a polymerization reaction product of diethyl methylene malonate and a multifunctional form of diethyl methylene malonate, wherein the multifunctional form of diethyl methylene malonate comprises a transesterification adduct of diethyl methylene malonate and at least one polyol. 16. The article of claim 13 , wherein the curable composition is cured to form the cured layer by applying an activator solution over and/or under at least a portion of the curable composition. 17. The article of claim 13 , wherein the cured layer is a clearcoat. 18. The article of claim 13 , wherein the curable composition is in direct contact with a metallic substrate of the article. 19. The article of claim 13 , wherein the curable composition is in direct contact with a non-metallic substrate of the article. 20. The article of claim 13 , wherein the curable composition is in direct contact with an electrodeposited layer of the article.
