Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Devices, systems, and methods for bone stabilization, especially volar distal radius stabilization. The stabilization system may include a bone plate having an elongated portion, an enlarged head portion, and a transition region connecting the elongated portion to the enlarged head portion, and the plate including a plurality of through holes. A plurality of fasteners may be configured to extend through one or more of the plurality of through holes in the bone plate and into the bone. The plate may be used to stabilize a fracture in a long bone, such as a radius.

What is claimed is: 1. A volar diaphyseal-metaphyseal bone plate comprising: a head portion configured and shaped to rest against a volar side of a metaphysis of a radial bone and having a plurality of first fastener holes arranged along a first direction; an elongate portion extending from the head portion having a plurality of second fastener holes arranged along a second direction lateral to the first direction, the elongated portion including a slot extending along the second direction and adapted for provisional alignment of the bone plate; wherein the elongate portion is configured and shaped to rest on a volar side of a diaphysis of the radial bone; and a transition region interposed between the elongated portion and the head portion, the transition region being laterally curved relative to a longitudinal axis the elongate portion. 2. The bone plate of claim 1 , wherein the second fastener holes include a first set of uniformly spaced and sized holes and a second set of uniformly spaced and sized holes that are smaller in diameter than the first set of holes. 3. The bone plate of claim 2 , wherein the first set of holes is disposed proximally of the second set of holes. 4. The bone plate of claim 1 , further comprising at least one k-wire. 5. The bone plate of claim 4 , further comprising at least one second k-wire. 6. The bone plate of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the elongate portion at its proximal end is higher than at its distal end. 7. The bone plate of claim 1 , wherein side walls of the elongate portion lack any relief cuts. 8. The bone plate of claim 1 , wherein a width of the of the elongate portion at its proximal end is higher than at its distal end. 9. A volar diaphyseal-metaphyseal bone plate comprising: a head portion configured and shaped to rest against a volar side of a metaphysis of a radial bone and having a plurality of first fastener holes arranged along a first direction; an elongate portion extending from the head portion having a plurality of second fastener holes arranged along a second direction lateral to the first direction, the elongated portion including a slot extending along the second direction and adapted for provisional alignment of the bone plate; wherein the elongate portion is configured and shaped to rest on a volar side of a diaphysis of the radial bone; wherein a thickness of the elongate portion at its proximal end is higher than at its distal end; and a transition region interposed between the elongated portion and the head portion, the transition region being laterally curved relative to a longitudinal axis the elongate portion. 10. The bone plate of claim 9 , wherein the second fastener holes include a first set of uniformly spaced and sized holes and a second set of uniformly spaced and sized holes that are smaller in diameter than the first set of holes. 11. The bone plate of claim 10 , wherein the first set of holes is disposed proximally of the second set of holes. 12. The bone plate of claim 9 , further comprising at least one k-wire. 13. The bone plate of claim 12 , further comprising at least one second k-wire. 14. The bone plate of claim 9 , wherein side walls of the elongate portion lack any relief cuts.
