Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Arthrodesis devices and arthrodesis procedures are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, an arthrodesis device includes a shape memory material connecting member attached to two points of fixation.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An arthrodesis device, comprising: a sleeve; a fixation body movably received in the sleeve; a shape memory material connecting member connected to the fixation body, wherein the fixation body is a separate component from the shape memory material connecting member; and a tensioning device connected to the fixation body and configured to move the fixation body inside the sleeve when tensioned, wherein the tensioning device is a cable received through a non-threaded opening of the fixation body. 2. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the sleeve includes at least one opening configured to receive a fixation device. 3. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein a first opening is located within a proximal portion of the sleeve and is configured to receive a tibial screw, a second opening is located within a distal portion of the sleeve and is configured to receive a talar screw, and a third opening is located within the distal portion of the sleeve and is configured to receive a calcaneal screw. 4. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the shape memory material connecting member is a rod made of Nitinol (NiTi). 5. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the shape memory material connecting member includes an elongated shaft extending between a first threaded portion and a second threaded portion. 6. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the shape memory material connecting member is configured to move between an unstretched position and a stretched position to generate a compressive force across bones of a joint. 7. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , comprising a second fixation body received within the sleeve, and further wherein the shape memory material connecting member is connected to both the fixation body and the second fixation body. 8. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the sleeve and the fixation body are each comprised of a titanium alloy. 9. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 1 , comprising a first screw received through a proximal portion of the sleeve, a second screw received through a distal portion of the sleeve, and a third screw received through the distal portion of the sleeve. 10. A method of performing an arthrodesis procedure, comprising: positioning an arthrodesis device within a joint; tensioning a tensioning device of the arthrodesis device, wherein tensioning the tensioning device stretches a shape memory material connecting member of the arthrodesis device from an unstretched condition to a stretched condition; and releasing tension on the tensioning device, wherein releasing the tension on the tensioning device causes the shape memory material connecting member to move back toward the unstretched condition, thereby applying a compressive load across bones of the joint, wherein the tensioning device is received through a non-threaded opening of a distal body that is movably received within the arthrodesis device, and the shape memory material connecting member is removably connected to a threaded opening of the distal body. 11. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the joint is a tibio-talo-calcaneal (TTC) joint of an ankle. 12. The method as recited in claim 10 , comprising, prior to positioning the arthrodesis device: inserting a guide wire into the joint; and reaming a passage at last partially through the joint for accommodating the arthrodesis device. 13. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the shape memory material connecting member connects between a proximal body and the distal body of the arthrodesis device, and the tensioning device is connected to the distal body, wherein tensioning the tensioning device includes: translating the distal body in a proximal to distal direction relative to the joint. 14. The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein translating the distal body moves the shape memory material connecting member of the arthrodesis device from the unstretched condition to the stretched condition, and further wherein the proximal body is fixed from movement prior to tensioning the tensioning device. 15. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the tensioning device is a metallic cable. 16. The method as recited in claim 10 , comprising: inserting a first fixation device and a second fixation device through the arthrodesis device prior to tensioning the tensioning device. 17. The method as recited in claim 16 , comprising: inserting a third fixation device through the arthrodesis device subsequent to tensioning the tensioning device. 18. An arthrodesis device, comprising: a sleeve; a first body located within the sleeve; a second body located within the sleeve; a Nitinol rod removably connected to both the first body and the second body; and a tensioning cable connected to the first body or the second body, wherein the tensioning cable is tensionable to move the first body or the second body inside the sleeve, thereby stretching the Nitinol rod, wherein the Nitinol rod is a separate component from either the first body or the second body. 19. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 18 , wherein the tensioning cable is received through a non-threaded opening of the first body or the second body, and the Nitinol rod includes a threaded portion that is removably connected to a threaded opening of the first body or the second body. 20. The arthrodesis device as recited in claim 19 , wherein the threaded opening extends along a first axis and the non-threaded opening extends along a second axis that is transverse to the first axis.
