Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical apparatus comprises a transducer assembly and a shaft assembly. The transducer assembly is operable to convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations. The shaft assembly comprises an ultrasonic waveguide, a sheath, a shroud, and a torque transfer assembly. The waveguide is configured to couple with the transducer assembly. The waveguide is disposed within the sheath. The sheath extends through the shroud. The torque transfer assembly is contained within the shroud. The torque transfer assembly is configured to transfer a predetermined range of torque from the shroud to the waveguide to thereby couple the waveguide with the transducer assembly. The torque transfer assembly is further configured to prevent transfer of torque from the shroud to the waveguide beyond an upper limit of the predetermined range.

We claim: 1. A surgical kit, comprising: (a) an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising: (i) a transducer assembly, wherein the transducer assembly is operable to convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations, wherein the transducer assembly comprises a first coupling feature, (ii) an ultrasonic waveguide comprising a complementary coupling feature, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide is configured to selectively couple with the transducer assembly, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide terminates at a distal end, and (iii) an ultrasonic blade located at the distal end of the ultrasonic waveguide; (b) a torque wrench, wherein the torque wrench is operable to drive rotation of the ultrasonic waveguide to thereby couple the ultrasonic waveguide with the transducer assembly, wherein the torque wrench comprises: (i) a torque limiting feature, wherein the torque limiting feature is operable to restrict an amount of torque by which the ultrasonic waveguide may be coupled with the transducer assembly, and (ii) a cap engagement feature including a base and a latch; and (c) a cap removably disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap is configured to transmit torque to the ultrasonic waveguide via the ultrasonic blade while the cap is disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap engagement feature is operable to engage the cap and thereby remove the cap from the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap engagement feature of the torque wrench defines a pocket dimensioned to at least partially house the cap, wherein the base includes a rigid base member defining at least a portion of the pocket, wherein the latch is configured to rotatably and longitudinally couple the cap to the base. 2. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the cap comprises a gripping tab configured to engage the ultrasonic blade to inhibit removal of the cap from the ultrasonic blade. 3. The surgical kit of claim 2 , wherein the gripping tab is configured to resiliently bear against the ultrasonic blade to thereby provide a friction fit that inhibits removal of the cap from the ultrasonic blade. 4. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the cap engagement feature comprises a tab, wherein the cap comprises a shoulder, wherein the tab is configured to engage the shoulder in order to render the cap engagement feature operable to remove the cap from the ultrasonic blade. 5. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the latch includes a resilient latch member also defining the pocket. 6. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasonic surgical instrument further comprises a housing, wherein the transducer assembly is at least partially contained within the housing. 7. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the torque wrench is configured to transmit torque onto the ultrasonic waveguide via the cap and the ultrasonic blade to thereby couple the ultrasonic waveguide to the transducer assembly. 8. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the cap engagement feature is configured to couple to the cap to thereby remove the cap from the ultrasonic blade. 9. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the cap engagement feature is configured to couple to the cap via a snap fitting such that rotation of the torque wrench drives rotation of the cap. 10. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the first coupling feature comprises a threaded stud. 11. The surgical kit of claim 10 , wherein the complementary coupling feature comprises a threaded bore dimensioned to mesh with the threaded stud. 12. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasonic blade comprises a scoop-like shape. 13. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the transducer assembly comprises a first conductive ring and a second conductive ring. 14. A surgical kit, comprising: (a) an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising: (i) a transducer assembly, wherein the transducer assembly is operable to convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations, wherein the transducer assembly comprises a first coupling feature, (ii) an ultrasonic waveguide comprising a complementary coupling feature, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide is configured to selectively couple with the transducer assembly, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide terminates at a distal end, and (ii) an ultrasonic blade located at the distal end of the ultrasonic waveguide; (b) a torque wrench including a rigid base member defining at least a portion of a pocket, wherein the torque wrench is operable to drive rotation of the ultrasonic waveguide to thereby couple the ultrasonic waveguide with the transducer assembly; and (c) a cap including a distal cap end and a proximal cap end, wherein the cap is removably disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap is configured to transmit torque to the ultrasonic waveguide via the ultrasonic blade while the cap is disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the torque wrench is operable to selectively engage the cap to thereby transmit torque from the torque wrench to the ultrasonic blade via the cap, wherein the proximal cap end is configured to receive the ultrasonic blade therethrough, and wherein the pocket houses the distal cap end within the torque wrench with the torque wrench engaged with the cap, wherein the torque wrench further includes a resilient latch member configured to rotatably and longitudinally couple the cap to the rigid base member. 15. The surgical kit of claim 14 , wherein the cap is configured to couple to the ultrasonic blade via a friction fitting. 16. The surgical kit of claim 15 , wherein the torque wrench is configured to engage the cap to thereby remove the cap from the ultrasonic blade. 17. The surgical kit of claim 14 , wherein the resilient latch member further defines the pocket. 18. A method of operatively attaching an ultrasonic waveguide onto a transducer assembly of a surgical kit, the surgical kit including (a) an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising: (i) the transducer assembly, wherein the transducer assembly is operable to convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations, wherein the transducer assembly comprises a first coupling feature, (ii) the ultrasonic waveguide comprising a complementary coupling feature, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide is configured to selectively couple with the transducer assembly, wherein the ultrasonic waveguide terminates at a distal end, and (iii) an ultrasonic blade located at the distal end of the ultrasonic waveguide; (b) a torque wrench, wherein the torque wrench is operable to drive rotation of the ultrasonic waveguide to thereby couple the ultrasonic waveguide with the transducer assembly, wherein the torque wrench comprises: (i) a torque limiting feature, wherein the torque limiting feature is operable to restrict an amount of torque by which the ultrasonic waveguide may be coupled with the transducer assembly, and (ii) a cap engagement feature including a base and a latch; and (c) a cap removably disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap is configured to transmit torque to the ultrasonic waveguide via the ultrasonic blade while the cap is disposed on the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap engagement feature is operable to engage the cap and thereby remove the cap from the ultrasonic blade, wherein the cap engagement feature of the torque wrench defines a pocket dimensioned to at least partially house the cap, wherein the base includes a rigid base member defining at least a portion of the pocket, wherein the latch is configured to rotatably and longitudinally couple the cap to the base, the method comprising: (i) rotating the ultrasonic waveguide
