Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Impeller bearings for pumps are disclosed. An example fluid pump includes a motor, a shaft coupled to a rotor of the motor, an impeller coupled to the shaft, a first radial bearing positioned around the shaft of the motor aft of the motor, and a second radial bearing positioned around the impeller.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A fluid pump comprising: a motor; a shaft coupled to a rotor of the motor; an impeller coupled to the shaft forward of the motor, the impeller including expeller vanes; a first radial bearing positioned around the shaft aft of the motor; a thrust bearing coupled to the shaft aft of the motor, the thrust bearing separate from the first radial bearing; and a second radial bearing positioned around the impeller, wherein the second radial bearing is a foil bearing through which fluid flows, the fluid to contact the expeller vanes after flowing through the second radial bearing. 2. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein the foil bearing is a first foil bearing, and wherein the first radial bearing is at least one of a second foil bearing, a hydrodynamic bearing, or a rolling element bearing. 3. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein the second radial bearing is positioned around a nose of the impeller. 4. The fluid pump of claim 3 , further including guide vanes extending radially from the second radial bearing. 5. The fluid pump of claim 3 , wherein an input fluid flows between the second radial bearing and the nose of the impeller. 6. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein the second radial bearing is positioned around a body of the impeller. 7. The fluid pump of claim 6 , wherein a portion of a fluid output driven by the impeller flows between the body of the impeller and the second radial bearing. 8. The fluid pump of claim 7 , wherein the fluid output flows toward the expeller vanes of the impeller in response to flowing between the body of the impeller and the second radial bearing. 9. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the second radial bearing is positioned forward of the expeller vanes of the impeller. 10. The fluid pump of claim 1 , further including a bolt to rotatably couple the shaft of the motor to the impeller, a first end of the bolt positioned in a cavity defined by the shaft, a second end of the bolt positioned forward of the expeller vanes of the impeller. 11. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein the impeller is coupled to an end of the shaft forward of the motor, and wherein the thrust bearing is positioned aft of the first radial bearing. 12. The fluid pump of claim 1 , wherein a primary flow inlet is defined forward of the second radial bearing and a secondary flow inlet is defined aft of the first radial bearing. 13. A fluid pump comprising: an impeller engaged with a shaft, the impeller including blades to pump fluid; and an impeller bearing radially positioned around a portion of the impeller, at least a portion of the impeller bearing positioned forward of the blades of the impeller, the impeller bearing and the impeller to define a flow path between the impeller bearing and the impeller, wherein the fluid in the flow path contacts the impeller bearing and the impeller at a same axial position defined by the fluid pump. 14. The fluid pump of claim 13 , further including a bolt to rotatably couple the impeller to the shaft, the bolt extending past the blades of the impeller. 15. The fluid pump of claim 14 , wherein the portion of the impeller bearing is a first portion, wherein at least a second portion of the impeller bearing is positioned around the bolt. 16. The fluid pump of claim 13 , further including: a motor to drive a rotation of the shaft, wherein the motor is separated from the impeller by a first distance; a shaft radial bearing positioned around the shaft, wherein the shaft radial bearing is separated from the impeller by a second distance greater than the first distance; and a thrust bearing positioned around the shaft, wherein the thrust bearing is separated from the impeller by a third distance greater than the second distance. 17. The fluid pump of claim 13 , wherein the impeller includes a nose, the nose defined forward of the blades, the impeller bearing positioned around the nose of the impeller, further including a stator vane housing positioned around the impeller bearing. 18. A fluid pump comprising: means for pumping fluid; means for positioning the means for pumping fluid; means for driving a rotation of the means for positioning; and means for supporting the means for pumping fluid, wherein the fluid flows through the means for pumping fluid after the fluid flows between the means for supporting and the means for pumping fluid, wherein the fluid remains in the fluid pump between flowing between the means for supporting and the means for pumping fluid and flowing through the means for pumping fluid. 19. The fluid pump of claim 18 , wherein a fluid intake of the fluid pump flows between the means for pumping fluid and the means for supporting. 20. The fluid pump of claim 18 , further including means for guiding the fluid towards the means for pumping fluid, the means for guiding positioned around the means for supporting.
