Official abstract text for this publication.
A social media platform provides a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for accessing social media content submitted for public accessibility via the social media platform supported by the map-based GUI. The GUI includes a map providing interactive location-based searching functionality in that selection of a target location by the user in the GUI, such as by tapping or clicking at the target location, triggers a search for social media content having geo-tag data indicating geographic locations within a geographical search area centered on the target location.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: causing generation of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media platform on a user device, the map-based GUI including an interactive map that shows a geographical area; causing display on the interactive map of a color-coded heatmap overlaid on the displayed geographical area to indicate geographical distribution of a metric of user activity on the social media platform, the heatmap comprising one or more heatmap portions that extend continuously over a respective map portion, each heatmap portion having variegated coloring corresponding in geographical distribution to variation in the user activity metric throughout the respective map portion; receiving a location targeted search query provided by user input comprising selection of a target point on the map via the map-based GUI; and in an automated operation performed using a search engine comprising one or more computer processor devices configured therefor, performing a location-based search for social media content with reference to the user-selected target point on the map; and causing display on the user device of search results of the location-based search. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metric of user activity indicated by the heatmap is based on user activity limited to posting of geo-tagged social media content that is published for general accessibility. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein performing the location-based search comprises: determining a geographical search area based at least in part on the user-selected target point; and identifying from a superset of social media items a search result set limited to items within the social media items superset respectively satisfy inclusion criteria that includes having a respective posting location situated within the geographical search area, the posting location of each social media item being indicated by respective item-specific geotag data. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising: causing display overlaid on the heatmap of a plurality of collection icons at different respective locations on the interactive map, each collection icon corresponding in location to a respective location-based collection, each collection comprising a respective set of social media items grouped together based at least in part on respective geotag data; and responsive to receiving user input indicating selection of a particular one of the plurality of collection icons, causing automated sequential reproduction of the corresponding set of social media items. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the inclusion criteria of the location-based search are further configured to exclude any social media item that is a member of any of the location-based collections represented by the plurality of displayed collection icons. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein display of the search results comprises causing presentation on the user device of search results for the location-based search by automatically launching, directly responsive to the location-targeted search query, automated sequential display of the search result set, the automated sequential display comprising reproduction of respective visual media content of the search result set one after another in sequence. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the launching of the automated sequential display is directly responsive to the location-targeted search query comprises automatically commencing replay of a first item in the search result set without any intervening user input. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the presentation of the search results by sequential visual media content reproduction is initiated without any preceding presentation of the search result set in list form. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the superset of social media items is comprised of image visual media-based ephemeral messages. 10. The method of claim 2 , wherein the metric of user activity indicated by the heatmap is based at least on part on an anomality metric that indicates a level of unusualness of social media item posting from the respective locations. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the anomality metric is a geo-temporal anomality metric, being a function of unusualness of social media item posting from each respective location for a particular time window within a larger conventional calendar unit. 12. A system comprising: one or more computer processor devices; and memory having stored thereon instructions that configure the one or more computer processor devices, when the instructions are executed by the one or more computer processor devices, to perform operations comprising: causing generation of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for a social media platform on a user device, the map-based GUI including an interactive map that shows a geographical area; causing display on the interactive map of a color-coded heatmap overlaid on the displayed geographical area to indicate geographical distribution of a metric of user activity on the social media platform, the heatmap comprising one or more heatmap portions that extend continuously over a respective map portion, each heatmap portion having variegated coloring corresponding in geographical distribution to variation in the user activity metric throughout the respective map portion; receiving a locationtargeted search query provided by user input comprising selection of a target point on the map via the map-based GUI; and performing a location-based search for social media content with reference to the user-selected target point on the map; and causing display on the user device of search results of the location-based search. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the metric of user activity indicated by the heatmap is based on user activity limited to posting of geo-tagged social media content that is published for general accessibility. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the instructions configure the one or more computer processor devices to perform the location-based search in a procedure comprising: determining a geographical search area based at least in part on the user-selected target point; and identifying from a superset of social media items a search result set limited to items within the social media items superset respectively satisfy inclusion criteria that includes having a respective posting location situated within the geographical search area, the posting location of each social media item being indicated by respective item-specific geotag data. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further configure the one or more computer processor devices to perform operations comprising: causing display overlaid on the heatmap of a plurality of collection icons at different respective locations on the interactive map, each collection icon corresponding in location to a respective location-based collection, each collection comprising a respective set of social media items grouped together based at least in part on respective geotag data; and responsive to receiving user input indicating selection of a particular one of the plurality of collection icons, causing automated sequential reproduction of the corresponding set of social media items. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the inclusion criteria of the location-based search are further configured to exclude any social media item that is a member of any of the location-based collections represented by the plurality of displayed collection icons. 17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the instructions configure the one or mor
