A smoking article may include a cigarette incorporated within an electrically powered aerosol generating device that acts as a holder for that cigarette. The smoking article possesses at least one form of tobacco. The smoking article also possesses a mouth-end piece that is used by the smoker to inhale components of tobacco that are generated by the action of heat upon components of the cigarette. A representative smoking article possesses an outer housing incorporating a source of electrical power (e.g., a battery), a sensing mechanism for powering the device at least during periods of draw, and a heating device (e.g., at least one electrical resistance heating element) for forming a thermally generated aerosol that incorporates components of tobacco. During use, the cigarette is positioned within the device, and after use, the used cigarette is removed from the device and replaced with another cigarette.

What is claimed is: 1. An aerosol-generating smoking article comprising a housing having a mouth end and a distal end, the smoking article further comprising: a cartridge inserted into the housing at the mouth end, the cartridge including an aerosol-forming material and a resistive heating element for heating the aerosol-forming material into an aerosol, wherein an air path is formed adjacent the resistive heating element to direct the aerosol through the cartridge and to the mouth end of the smoking article; and at least one air passageway formed between the housing and the cartridge for air drawn into the smoking article. 2. The smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising a mouthpiece attached proximate the cartridge. 3. The smoking article of claim 2 , wherein the air drawn into the smoking article through the air passageway is outside air. 4. The smoking article of claim 3 , wherein the air drawn through the air passageway is mixed with the aerosol and flows out of the mouthpiece. 5. The smoking article of claim 4 , wherein a visible mainstream aerosol flows out the mouthpiece into a mouth of a user of the smoking article. 6. The smoking article of claim 2 , wherein the mouthpiece is secured by a friction fit at the cartridge. 7. The smoking article of claim 2 , wherein the air path through the cartridge comprises aerosol flowing to the mouthpiece. 8. The smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising a mouthpiece attached at the mouth end of the article. 9. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge comprises a first end and a second end, one of the first end and the second end being arranged proximate to the mouth end of the article, wherein the smoking article further comprises a mouthpiece attached proximate the first end or the second end of the cartridge arranged proximate to the mouth end of the article. 10. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the resistive heating element comprises an electrical resistance heater in the cartridge configured to perform electrical resistance heating of the aerosol-forming material. 11. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge comprises a ceramic material. 12. The smoking article of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the ceramic material forms the resistive heating element. 13. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the aerosol-forming material is a liquid that can be wicked into contact with the resistive heating element and volatilized to produce the aerosol. 14. The smoking article of claim 13 , wherein the cartridge comprises an absorbent fibrous material absorbing at least a portion of the liquid that is wicked into contact with the resistive heating element to be vaporized into the aerosol that can be drawn into a mouth of the user of the smoking article. 15. The smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising a puff-actuated controller comprising a sensor adapted to sense draw on the smoking article by a user. 16. The smoking article of claim 15 , wherein the resistive heating element is powered by a power source in response to the sensor sensing draw on the smoking article. 17. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the air passageway is formed between an inner wall of the housing and an outer wall of the cartridge. 18. An aerosol-generating article comprising: a housing comprising a first end and an opposing second end; a cartridge, inserted into the housing at the second end of the housing, comprises a resistive heating element, the cartridge is configured to store an aerosol-forming material that can be volatilized into an aerosol by heat from the resistive heating element, wherein the volatilized aerosol flows through the cartridge; and at least one air passageway disposed between the housing and the cartridge for flow of air from outside of the aerosol-generating article. 19. The aerosol-generating article of claim 18 , further comprising a mouthpiece at the second end of the housing. 20. The aerosol-generating article of claim 19 , wherein the mouthpiece is removable and is connected to the aerosol-generating article via a friction fit. 21. The aerosol-generating article of claim 19 , wherein the volatilized aerosol comprises a visible mainstream aerosol that flows out of the mouthpiece. 22. The aerosol-generating article of claim 19 , wherein the air drawn through the air passageway is mixed with the volatilized aerosol and flows out of the mouthpiece. 23. The aerosol-generating article of claim 18 , further comprising a puff-actuated controller comprising a sensor adapted to sense draw on the smoking article by a user. 24. The aerosol-generating article of claim 23 , wherein the resistive heating element comprises an electrical resistance heater powered by a battery proximate to the first end of the housing in response to the sensor sensing draw on the smoking article. 25. The aerosol-generating article of claim 18 , wherein the air passageway is formed between an inner wall of the housing and an outer wall of the cartridge. 26. The aerosol-generating article of claim 18 , wherein the cartridge comprises an absorbent fibrous material absorbing at least a portion of the aerosol-forming material such that the aerosol-forming material is wicked, by the absorbent fibrous material, into contact with the resistive heating element to be vaporized into the aerosol that can be drawn into a mouth of the user of the smoking article. 27. The aerosol-generating article of claim 18 , wherein the cartridge comprises a ceramic material, and wherein at least a portion of the ceramic material forms the resistive heating element. 28. An aerosol-generating smoking article having a mouth end and a distal end comprising: a power source; a housing holding the power source proximate the distal end; a cartridge inserted into the housing at the mouth end, the cartridge comprising: a storage for an aerosol-forming material; a resistive heating element in communication with the power source and configured to volatilize the aerosol-forming material into an aerosol; and an air path for the volatilized aerosol to flow through the cartridge; an air passageway between the housing and the cartridge for air drawn into the smoking article; and a mouthpiece coupled with the air path, wherein the air drawn through the air passageway is mixed with the volatilized aerosol and flows out of the mouthpiece. 29.
