Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fluid dispenser includes a housing, a pump, an outlet nozzle, a reservoir, a liquid passage, an air passage, and a refill container. The pump and reservoir are attached to the housing, and both the outlet nozzle and the reservoir are in fluid communication with the pump. The reservoir has at least one engagement member, and the liquid passage and the air passage are located in the engagement member. The refill container has at least one sealing member, and the refill container is configured to be releasably attached to the reservoir such that the refill container is in fluid communication with the reservoir. When the refill container is attached to the reservoir, the engagement member engages the sealing member to cause the liquid passage and the air passage to be in fluid communication with the refill container.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A dispenser comprising: a housing; an actuator; a pump; a reservoir; the reservoir having one or more connectors for connecting to a refill unit; wherein the one or more connectors are configured to allow liquid to flow out of the refill unit and into the reservoir and to allow air to flow from the reservoir to the refill unit; wherein the one or more connectors has an air inlet and a liquid outlet; and wherein a bottom of the air inlet is above a bottom of the liquid outlet; a vent; a reservoir outlet in fluid communications with the pump; and a dispenser outlet. 2. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent is in a side wall of the reservoir. 3. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent is in a top surface of the reservoir. 4. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the one or more connectors is a single connector and the single connector has a first passage for the air and a second passage for the liquid. 5. The dispenser of claim 1 further comprising a vent valve. 6. The dispenser of claim 5 wherein the vent valve comprises a float. 7. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent allows the air to flow out of the reservoir. 8. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent allows the air to flow into the reservoir. 9. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the reservoir comprises an opening located in a bottom surface for receiving at least a portion of the pump. 10. The dispenser of claim 9 wherein the pump is a venting pump and the reservoir is vented through the opening located in the bottom surface of the reservoir. 11. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent is located above the liquid in the reservoir. 12. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the vent is located below the liquid in the reservoir. 13. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the reservoir has a top surface and the top surface includes a raised portion forming a cavity in the interior of the reservoir, and wherein the one or more connectors are located in the raised portion. 14. The dispenser of claim 1 wherein the one or more connectors is one or more posts. 15. The dispenser of claim 1 further comprising the refill unit. 16. The dispenser of claim 15 , wherein the refill unit comprises a resealable sealing member that reseals itself when removed from the one or more connectors. 17. A dispenser comprising: a housing; an actuator; a pump; a reservoir; the reservoir having a first top surface; a second top surface; a cavity formed at least in part by the first top surface and the second top surface; one or more connectors located above at least a portion of the first top surface for connecting to a refill unit; wherein the one or more connectors are configured to allow liquid to flow out of the refill unit and into the reservoir and to allow air to flow from an air inlet in the cavity in the reservoir to the refill unit; a vent located above at least a portion of the top surface; wherein the vent allows the air to flow out of the reservoir; wherein the vent allows the air to flow into the reservoir; and wherein the vent prevents the liquid from flowing out of the reservoir through the vent; a reservoir outlet in fluid communications with the pump; and a dispenser outlet. 18. The dispenser of claim 17 wherein the vent is located above a top surface of the reservoir. 19. The dispenser of claim 17 wherein the vent is located above the liquid. 20. A dispenser comprising: a housing; a refill unit; an actuator; a pump; a reservoir; the reservoir having a first opening for placing the reservoir in fluid communication with the refill unit; wherein liquid flows out of the refill unit into the reservoir; wherein air flows from the reservoir into the refill unit; a second opening for placing the reservoir in fluid communication with the pump; and a third opening for venting the reservoir; wherein the third opening includes a vent; wherein at least a portion of the vent is located above an upper surface of the reservoir; wherein the vent allows the air to flow out of the reservoir; wherein the vent allows the air to flow into the reservoir; and wherein the vent prevents the liquid from flowing out of the reservoir through the vent; a reservoir outlet placing the second opening in fluid communications with the pump; and a dispenser outlet.
