Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A liquid concentrate generation system may comprise a manifold having an inlet receptacle including a first piercing member, an outlet receptacle including a second piercing member, and a flow channel connecting the inlet receptacle and outlet receptacle. The system may further comprise a cartridge having an inlet port and an outlet port sealed by a respective first and second cover. The inlet and outlet port may be respectively configured to displace within the inlet receptacle and outlet receptacle from an unspiked position to a spiked position. First and second piercing members may be in communication with the flow channel and spaced apart respectively from the first and second cover in the unspiked position. The first and second piercing members may be isolated from the flow channel and may respectively puncture the first and second cover in the spiked position.

What is claimed is: 1. A fluid production system for producing a fluid having at least one desired characteristic comprising: a mixing circuit having a first portion, second portion, and third portion, each of the first and second portion being in communication via respective valves with the third portion, the mixing circuit having a first and second receptacle, each including a piercing member and each being connected to one another via a flow channel; and a cartridge having an inlet port and an outlet port each sealed by a cover, the inlet and outlet port configured to displace respectively within the first receptacle and second receptacle from a first position within the respective first and second receptacles to a second position within the respective first and second receptacles, the piercing members in fluid communication via the flow channel in the first position, the piercing members isolated from the flow channel, and each cover punctured by a respective piercing member of the piercing members when the inlet and outlet port are in the second position. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mixing circuit includes respective conductivity sensors for the first portion, second portion, and third portion, the conductivity sensors positioned to sense conductivity of fluid passing through the first portion, second portion, and third portion. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the system further comprises a controller configured to govern operation of the valves based on data from at least one of the conductivity sensors. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge has an interior volume filled at least partially with a solid constituent, the first piercing member includes a flow lumen in fluid communication with a diluent supply flow path from the first portion of the mixing circuit, and the second piercing member includes a flow lumen in fluid communication with an inlet to the second portion. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a carriage configured to couple to the cartridge, a cartridge detection sensor, a cartridge position sensor, and an actuator configured to drive the carriage through a displacement range, where the inlet and outlet ports transition from the first position to the second position when the cartridge is coupled to the carriage. 6. A liquid concentrate generation system comprising: a manifold having a first receptacle including a first piercing member, a second receptacle including a second piercing member, and a flow channel connecting the first receptacle and second receptacle; and a cartridge having an inlet port and an outlet port sealed by a respective first and second cover, the inlet and outlet port are respectively displaceable within the first receptacle and second receptacles from an unspiked position within the respective first and second receptacles to a spiked position within the respective first and second receptacles, the first and second piercing members being in communication with the flow channel and spaced apart respectively from the first and second cover in the unspiked position, the first and second piercing members isolated from the flow channel and respectively puncturing the first and second cover in the spiked position. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the cartridge has an interior volume filled at least partially with a solid constituent. 8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first piercing member includes a flow lumen in fluid communication with a fluid supply flow path of the manifold. 9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second piercing member includes a flow lumen in fluid communication with a liquid concentrate flow path of the manifold. 10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the inlet port and outlet port each include a wide region associated with a first gasket and a narrow region associated with a second gasket. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein in the unspiked position, the first gaskets of the inlet port and outlet port respectively form a seal against the wall of the first receptacle and second receptacle and the second gaskets of the inlet port and outlet port are out of contact with the wall of the first receptacle and second receptacle respectively. 12. The system of claim 10 , wherein in the spiked position, the first and second gasket of the inlet port form a seal against the wall of the first receptacle and the first and second gasket of the outlet port form a seal against the wall of the second receptacle. 13. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first piercing member is disposed more proximal a narrow region of the first receptacle than a wide region of the first receptacle and the second piercing member is disposed more proximal a narrow region of the second receptacle than a wide region of the second receptacle. 14. The system of claim 6 , wherein in the spiked position the first piercing member is in fluid communication with the second piercing member via a flow path from the inlet port, through an interior volume of the cartridge, and to the outlet port. 15. The system of claim 6 , wherein the system further comprises an actuator and a carriage, the cartridge configured to couple to the carriage. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the system further comprises a cartridge detection sensor and a cartridge position sensor. 17. A fluid flow coupling arrangement comprising: a manifold having a set of receptacles each including a wide region, a narrow region, and a piercing member with a flow lumen, there being a disinfection flow path extending into fluid communication with each receptacle; and a consumable having a set of ports, each having a port cover and a plurality of sealing members, the consumable displaceable with respect to the manifold from a partially installed position to a spiked position, the ports being disposed at least partially within and sealing a respective receptacle of the set of receptacles in both the partially installed position and spiked position, the piercing members being in communication with the disinfection flow path and spaced apart from the covers in the partially installed position, the piercing members isolated from the disinfection flow path and puncturing the covers in the spiked position. 18. The fluid flow coupling arrangement of claim 17 , wherein the ports each include a first region with a first sealing member of the plurality of sealing members and a second region with a second sealing member of the plurality of sealing members. 19.
