A patient support may be adjustable in height, width, length or a combination thereof. The patient support may be usable with normal sized patients or with bariatric patients. The patient support has a variety of features to enhance operability and/or functionality, including a width adjustable caster frame, width adjustable deck portions, a width adjustable headboard and an extendible foot board to provide extra length. An enhanced lift mechanism can accommodate bariatric patients and alternative functionality in achieving deck positions improves patient comfort. Various parts of the patient support including deck panels and the footboard may be removed and replaced with ease without complicated connectors.

We claim: 1. A patient support for supporting a patient thereon, said patient support comprising: a deck for supporting a mattress thereon; a lift for raising or lowering said deck; a side rail mounted relative to said deck and movable between a raised position and a lowered position, and said side rail being lockable; and a control system configured to adjust an allowable height of said deck based on a status of said side rail. 2. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein said status of said side rail is a locked status of said side rail. 3. The patient support according to claim 2 , wherein said allowable height comprises an allowable maximum height of the deck. 4. The patient support according to claim 3 , wherein when said side rail is unlocked, said control system being configured to adjust the allowable maximum height to a lower allowable maximum height. 5. The patient support according to claim 4 , further comprising a user input at said patient support in communication with said control system, wherein said control system ignores a command at said user input when said user input generates a command to raise said deck above said lower allowable maximum height. 6. The patient support according to claim 1 , wherein said status of said side rail is a lowered or raised state of said side rail. 7. The patient support according to claim 6 , wherein said allowable height comprises an allowable minimum height of the deck. 8. The patient support according to claim 7 , wherein when said side rail is lowered, said control system configured to adjust the allowable minimum height to a higher allowable minimum height. 9. The patient support according to claim 8 , further comprising a user input at said patient support in communication with said control system, wherein said control system ignores a command at said user input when said user input generates a command to lower said deck below said higher allowable minimum height. 10. A patient support comprising: a height adjustable patient support deck; a side rail mounted relative to said patient support deck along a side of the patient support, said side rail movable vertically relative to said patient support deck; and a control system configured to determine a side rail status of said side rail and to enable or disable a function of said patient support and/or to adjust a parameter of the patient support based on said side rail status. 11. The patient support according to claim 10 , said control system include a sensor to detect said side rail status of said side rail. 12. The patient support according to claim 10 , further comprising a user input at said patient support in communication with said control system, wherein based on said side rail status said control system ignores a command at said user input when said user input generates a command to control said function and/or to adjust a parameter of said patient support. 13. The patient support according to claim 10 , wherein said parameter is a height of said deck. 14. The patient support according to claim 13 , wherein when said side rail is unlocked, said control system configured to lower the allowable maximum height of said side rail. 15. The patient support according to claim 13 , wherein when said side rail is unlocked, said control system configured to ignore a command at said user input when said user input generates a command to adjust the height of the side rail to above an allowable maximum height. 16. A patient support comprising: a height adjustable patient support deck; a side rail mounted relative to said patient support deck along a side of the patient support, said side rail movable vertically relative to said patient support deck; and a control system configured to enable and/or disable actions of the patient support in response to a sensed side rail status. 17. The patient support according to claim 16 , wherein said control system includes a plurality of sensors, said sensors configured to sense said side rail status and sense a position of said patient support deck. 18. The patient support according to claim 17 , wherein said control system is configured to enable and/or disable actions of the patient support in response to sensed combinations of patient support deck height and said side rail status. 19. The patient support according to claim 16 , wherein said side rail is movable between a raised position above said patient support deck and an ultralow position fully below said patient support deck. 20. The patient support according to claim 19 , wherein said side rail is movable longitudinally but not laterally while the side rail is moved between the raised position and the ultralow position.
