Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method is performed at an electronic payment module with one or more processors, memory, a slave interface that couples the module with an unattended machine via a multi-drop bus (MDB), and one or more host interfaces that couple the module with at least one payment peripheral of the unattended machine. The method also includes: receiving, from a refund center, a request to issue an approved refund of a predetermined amount and one or more criteria that must be satisfied before dispensing the predetermined amount. In accordance with a determination that the one or more criteria are met, the method includes issuing (i) a signal to the unattended machine, via the slave interface, that the at least one payment peripheral is unavailable and (ii) a signal to the at least one payment peripheral, via the one or more host interfaces, to dispense the predetermined amount.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: at a mobile device: receiving a request for a cash payment; transmitting the request to an authorizing server distinct from the mobile device; receiving from the authorizing server an authorization message authorizing the cash payment; in response to receiving the authorization message, receiving a user selection of a payment accepting machine distinct from the mobile device; transmitting from the mobile device to the payment accepting machine an electronic command including one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions, wherein a first of the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions comprises a predefined time or time period by which a button or control at the payment accepting machine must be engaged; displaying the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions on a display of the mobile device; at the payment accepting machine: receiving the electronic command and the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions from the mobile device; determining that the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions are met, including determining that the button or control at the payment accepting machine has been engaged within the predefined time or time period; and in response to the determination that the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions are met, issuing the cash payment. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, at the payment accepting machine: identifying a message sent via a multi-drop bus (MDB) of the payment accepting machine; and determining that the button or control at the payment accepting machine has been engaged based on the message received via the MDB. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a dedicated electronic device distinct from the payment accepting machine. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a personal mobile device distinct from the payment accepting machine. 5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, at the payment accepting machine: in response to the determination that the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions are met, issuing: (i) a first signal via the MDB making a payment peripheral of the payment accepting machine unavailable for vending transactions, and (ii) a second signal via the MDB causing the payment peripheral to issue the cash payment. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cash payment is a refund of a failed vending transaction involving the payment accepting machine. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cash payment is a refund of a failed vending transaction involving a different payment accepting machine. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cash payment is a withdrawal from a user account that is linked with the authorizing server. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the electronic command from the mobile device to the payment accepting machine includes transmitting an encrypted payload secured with a unique private key to a multi-drop bus (MDB) router of the payment accepting machine. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment accepting machine is a vending machine, a parking meter, a toll booth, a washer, a dryer, an arcade game, a kiosk, a photo booth, or a transit ticket dispensing machine. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the button or control at the payment accepting machine has been engaged within the predefined time or time period includes determining that a coin return button at the payment accepting machine has been pressed within the predefined time or time period. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the one or more time-dependent and payment accepting machine-dependent conditions are met further includes determining that a valid code has been entered at the payment accepting machine within the predefined time or time period.
