Articles and methods of using and making adaptive garment portions are provided. An adaptive garment portion is one that has shifting surfaces with apertures that shift from an aligned to an offset orientation depending on environmental conditions/stimuli. For example, a first surface material and a second surface material may be coupled by a responsive material portion. The responsive material portion may physically change in response to a change in environmental conditions internal or external to the garment (e.g., thermal energy, moisture) and/or stimuli (e.g., light energy, electrical energy, magnetic fields). The physical change in the responsive material portion facilitates the planar shift of the first surface material relative to the second surface material.

The invention claimed is: 1. An article of clothing comprising: an adaptive garment portion, the adaptive garment portion comprising: a first material portion having a first set of apertures, the first material portion having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first surface and the second surface aligned in a first planar direction; a second material portion having a second set of apertures, the second material portion having a third surface and a fourth surface opposite the third surface, the third surface and the fourth surface aligned in the first planar direction, the first set of apertures and the second set of apertures having a first set of characteristics; and a responsive material portion positioned between the first material portion and the second material portion, the responsive material portion configured to change from a first physical state to a second physical state in response to changes in one or more of temperature, moisture, light energy, magnetic field, and electrical energy, the change of the responsive material portion from the first physical state to the second physical state causing the first material portion and the second material portion to shift relative to one another at least in the first planar direction, wherein one or more characteristics of the first set of apertures and the second set of apertures differs depending on a location of the adaptive garment portion on the article of clothing. 2. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein the one or more characteristics include one or more of an aperture pattern, an aperture shape, and an aperture orientation. 3. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein the first set of apertures of the first material portion are offset in the first planar direction a first amount from the second set of apertures of the second material portion when the adaptive garment portion is in the first physical state. 4. The article of clothing of claim 3 , wherein the first set of apertures of the first material portion are offset in the first planar direction a second amount from the second set of apertures of the second material portion when the adaptive garment portion is in the second physical state. 5. The article of clothing of claim 4 , wherein the first amount is greater than the second amount. 6. The article of clothing of claim 4 , wherein the first amount is less than the second amount. 7. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are offset from each other in a direction perpendicular to the first planar direction a first distance when the adaptive garment portion is in the first physical state, and wherein the first material portion and the second material portion are offset from each other in a direction perpendicular to the first planar direction a second distance different from the first distance when the adaptive garment portion is in the second physical state. 8. The article of clothing of claim 7 , wherein the offset in the first planar direction is lateral, and the offset in the direction perpendicular to the first planar direction is vertical. 9. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein the first set of apertures of the first material portion extend through the first surface and the second surface of the first material portion. 10. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein the second set of apertures of the second material portion extend through the third surface and the fourth surface of the second material portion. 11. The article of clothing of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the first material portion and the second material portion comprise a non-woven textile. 12. An upper-body garment comprising: an adaptive garment portion, the adaptive garment portion comprising: a first material portion having a first set of apertures, the first material portion having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, the first surface and the second surface aligned in a first planar direction; a second material portion having a second set of apertures, the second material portion having a third surface and a fourth surface opposite the third surface, the third surface and the fourth surface aligned in the first planar direction, the first set of apertures and the second set of apertures having a first set of characteristics; and a responsive material portion positioned between the first material portion and the second material portion, the responsive material portion configured to change from a first physical state to a second physical state in response to changes in one or more of temperature, moisture, light energy, magnetic field, and electrical energy, the change of the responsive material portion from the first physical state to the second physical state causing the first material portion and the second material portion to shift relative to one another at least in the first planar direction, wherein one or more characteristics of the first set of apertures and the second set of apertures differs between a first location and a second location of the adaptive garment portion on the upper-body garment. 13. The upper-body garment of claim 12 , wherein the one or more characteristics includes one or more of an aperture pattern, an aperture shape, and an aperture orientation. 14. The upper-body garment of claim 12 , wherein the first location comprises a chest region of the upper-body garment, and wherein the second location comprises an underarm region of the upper-body garment. 15. The upper-body garment of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the first material portion and the second material portion comprises a non-woven textile. 16. The upper-body garment of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the first material portion and the second material portion comprises a knit textile or a woven textile. 17. An article of clothing comprising: a first material portion comprising, at a first location of the article of clothing, a first aperture having a first aperture characteristic and, at a second location of the article of clothing, a second aperture having a second aperture characteristic which differs from the first aperture characteristic; a second material portion comprising a third aperture that is laterally offset from the first aperture by a first amount; and a responsive material portion positioned between and coupled to the first material portion and the second material portion, the responsive material portion configured to change from a first physical state to a second physical state in response to changes in one or more of temperature, moisture, light energy, magnetic field, and electrical energy, the change from the first physical state to the second physical state causing the first aperture to be laterally offset from the third aperture by a second amount different from the first amount. 18. The article of clothing of claim 17 , wherein the second amount is less than the first amount. 19. The article of clothing of claim 17 , wherein the second amount is greater than the first amount. 20.
