Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An actuation mechanism for use in a vehicle. The actuation mechanism includes one or more motors having an output shaft with a sun gear. At least a portion of the sun gear is drivingly connected to at least a portion of one or more planetary gears. The one or more planetary gears are drivingly connected to at least a portion of a carrier, a fixed non-rotating ring gear and an output gear. The disclosure further relates to a method of operating an actuation mechanism that is drivingly connected to at least a portion of a vehicle parking mechanism. The method includes providing an actuation mechanism, providing a parking mechanism and one or more sensors that are operably configured to collect an amount of data to be analyzed. Based on the data analyzed, one or more failures within the parking mechanism may be determined and an alert may be sent.

The invention claimed is: 1. An actuation mechanism, comprising: one or more motors having a motor output shaft with a sun gear; a planetary gear assembly comprising: a fixed non-rotating ring gear; a carrier, wherein said carrier comprises a first portion and a second portion; an output gear; and one or more planetary gears, wherein at least a portion of said one or more planetary gears are drivingly connected to at least a portion of said carrier, said sun gear, said fixed non-rotating ring gear, and said output gear, wherein said planetary gear assembly of said actuation mechanism is non-back drivable, and wherein said first portion and said second portion are two separate portions directly attached to each other in a press-fit manner, said first portion and said second portion having the same length along an axial direction of said carrier. 2. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein said first portion comprises one or more first attachment portions. 3. The actuation mechanism of claim 2 , wherein said second portion comprises one or more second attachment portions. 4. The actuation mechanism of claim 3 , wherein said one or more second attachment portions includes a hollow attachment portion, said hollow attachment portion having a size and shape to receive said one or more first attachment portions. 5. The actuation mechanism of claim 4 , wherein said one or more first attachment portions press-fit within said hollow attachment portion of said one or more second attachment portions. 6. The actuation mechanism of claim 3 , wherein a number of said one or more first attachment portions corresponds to a number of one or more second attachment portions. 7. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein said carrier comprises one or more planetary gear support portions. 8. The actuation mechanism of claim 7 , wherein said one or more planetary gear support portions provide rotational support for said one or more planetary gears and drivingly connects said one or more planetary gears to said carrier. 9. The actuation mechanism of claim 7 , wherein a number of said one or more planetary gear support portions corresponds to a number of said one or more planetary gears. 10. The actuation mechanism of claim 7 , wherein said first portion further comprises one or more first planetary gear support portion retention members. 11. The actuation mechanism of claim 10 , wherein said one or more first planetary gear support portion retention members comprises a first hollow interior portion. 12. The actuation mechanism of claim 11 , wherein said first hollow interior portion has a size and shape to retain at least a portion of a first end portion of said one or more planetary gear support portions. 13. The actuation mechanism of claim 7 , wherein said second portion further comprises one or more second planetary gear support portion retention members. 14. The actuation mechanism of claim 13 , wherein said one or more second planetary gear support portion retention members comprises a second hollow interior portion. 15. The actuation mechanism of claim 14 , wherein said second hollow interior portion has a size and shape to retain at least a portion of a second end portion of said one or more planetary gear support portions. 16. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein said first portion comprises a motor output shaft aperture. 17. The actuation mechanism of claim 16 , wherein said second portion comprises an output gear aperture. 18. The actuation mechanism of claim 17 , wherein said output gear aperture is aligned with said motor output shaft aperture. 19. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said sun gear and said one or more planetary gears are disposed within said carrier. 20. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein said sun gear is integrally formed as part of said motor output shaft, and where said first portion and said second portion engage at a mid-section of said carrier.
