Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Packaging systems are configured for improving long-term stability of a composition. Packaging systems may include a packaging container defining an enclosed volume. The packaging system may additionally include a removable cover that enables the packaging container to be opened and closed such that the packaging container system includes a sealed or sealable volume to contain a main composition in fluid communication with a sacrificial composition. The main composition may include one or more volatile or gas-releasing materials and the sacrificial material may include a stabilizing component that replaces the at least one volatile or gas-releasing component within the main composition or displaces the at least one volatile or gas-releasing component within the enclosed volume. The sacrificial composition helps maintain stability of the main composition by accelerating equilibrium of vapors or gases within the headspace of the sealed interior volume.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A packaging and dental treatment system, comprising: a container and a removable cover defining a sealed container with a sealed interior volume; a dental composition positioned in the sealed interior volume, the dental composition comprising at least one decomposable gas-releasing component at a first concentration; and a sacrificial composition, separate from and in fluid communication with the dental composition, and including the at least one decomposable gas-releasing component at a second concentration higher than the first concentration. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the container includes: a well or compartment in which a dental appliance and the dental composition are positioned; and a region, separate from and in fluid communication with the compartment, in which the sacrificial composition is positioned. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the well or compartment has a shape that corresponds to a shape of the dental appliance. 4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the dental appliance comprises a dental treatment strip or tray. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the at least one decomposable gas-releasing component comprises a peroxide. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sealed container is substantially impervious to the at least one gas-releasing component. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the container comprises a laminate structure including at least one barrier layer substantially impervious to at least one of air, oxygen, other gases, or moisture and at least one structural layer that provides strength and rigidity to the laminate structure. 8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the removable cover comprises at least one of foil, paper, or laminate material. 9. A system as in claim 1 , wherein the sacrificial composition contains the same components as the dental composition. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sealed interior volume is less than about 500%, less than about 300%, or less than about 200%, of a combined volume of the dental composition and the sacrificial composition. 11. A packaging and dental treatment system, comprising: a container and a removable cover defining a sealed container with a sealed interior volume; a first region in which a dental composition is positioned, the dental composition comprising at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component at a first concentration; and a second region in which a sacrificial composition is positioned, the sacrificial composition including the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component at a second concentration higher than the first concentration, with the proviso that where the dental composition is an adhesive, the sacrificial composition omits or includes a lesser amount of adhesive monomer than the dental composition. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component is selected from the group consisting of water and organic solvents. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the dental composition is a dental treatment composition or a dental adhesive composition. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the dental composition is an adhesive composition comprising a volatile monomer, and wherein the sacrificial composition omits of the volatile monomer. 15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a dental appliance for use with the dental composition. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the dental appliance is a dental treatment tray and the dental composition comprises a peroxide bleaching composition that contains a gas-releasing peroxide component. 17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the dental appliance is a dental treatment strip and the dental composition comprises a peroxide bleaching composition that contains a gas-releasing peroxide component. 18. A packaging and dental treatment system, comprising: a container and a removable cover defining a sealed container with a sealed interior volume; a dental treatment composition positioned in the sealed interior volume, the dental composition comprising at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component; and a sacrificial composition separate from and in fluid communication with the dental composition, the sacrificial composition having at least one of: a greater amount of the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component than the dental treatment composition; or a greater rate of vaporization or gas-release of the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component than the dental treatment composition. 19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the sacrificial composition has a greater amount of the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component than the dental treatment composition. 20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the sacrificial composition has a greater rate of vaporization or gas-release of the at least one volatile material or gas-releasing component than the dental treatment composition.
