This disclosure relates to advanced image signal processing technology including encoded signals and digital watermarking. One claim is directed to a container comprising: a 3004 or 3003 aluminum alloy shell, the shell comprising an outer surface and an inner surface; a first layer of transparent ink printed on the outer surface as a flood within a first region; a second layer of the transparent ink printed over the first layer of transparent ink within the first region, in which the second layer of the transparent ink is printed to include a plurality of holes without any transparent ink printed therein; an opaque ink printed within the plurality of holes of the second layer of transparent ink on first layer of transparent ink within the first region, in which: i) the outer surface/first layer/second layer, and ii) the outer surface/first layer/opaque ink comprise a spectral reflectance difference at a machine-vision wavelength in the range of 8%-35%, and in which the plurality of holes are arranged in a 2-dimensional pattern according to a machine-readable signal, the 2-dimensional pattern being machine-readable from imagery captured of the first region. What is claimed is: 1. A container comprising: an aluminum alloy shell, the aluminum alloy shell comprising an outer surface and an inner surface; a first layer of transparent ink printed over the outer surface within a first region, in which the first layer of the transparent ink is printed to include a plurality of holes without any transparent ink printed therein; a second layer of the transparent ink printed over the first layer of the transparent ink within the first region, in which the second layer of the transparent ink is printed to include a plurality of holes without any the transparent ink printed therein, in which the plurality of holes in the first layer and the plurality of holes in the second layer occupy overlapping spatial coordinates within the first region; an opaque ink printed within the plurality of holes in the first layer and the plurality of holes in the second layer within the first region, in which: i) the outer surface/first layer/second layer, and ii) the outer surface/opaque ink comprise a spectral reflectance difference in a range of 8%-35%, and in which the plurality of holes in the first layer and the plurality of holes in the second layer are arranged in a 2-dimensional pattern according to a machine-readable signal, the 2-dimensional pattern being machine-readable from imagery captured of the first region. 2. The container of claim 1 in which the range comprises 12-35%. 3. The container of claim 2 in which the transparent ink comprises PMS® 185, PMS® 2347, or PMS® 484. 4. The container of claim 3 in which the opaque ink comprises an opaque version of PMS® 185, PMS® 2347, or PMS® 484. 5. The container of claim 1 in which the plurality of holes in the first layer and the plurality of holes in the second layer each comprise a 2×2 pixel area at 600 dpi, or a 3×3 pixel area at 600 dpi, or a 4×4 pixel area at 600 dpi. 6. The container of claim 1 in which the plurality of holes in the first layer and the plurality of holes in the second layer each comprise a 1-pixel×1-pixel diagonal at 600 dpi. 7. The container of claim 1 which the opaque ink comprises a trap printed over the second layer of the transparent ink. 8. The container of claim 7 which the trap comprises a 1/600″ overprint at 600 dpi or the trap comprises a 1/300″ overprint at 300 dpi. 9. The container of claim 1 in which the opaque ink comprises a reverse trap relative to the second layer of the transparent ink. 10. The container of claim 9 in which the reverse trap comprises a 1/600″ underprint at 600 dpi, or the reverse trap comprises a 1/300″ underprint at 300 dpi. 11. The container of claim 1 in which the aluminum alloy shell comprises a 3004 or 3003 aluminum alloy shell, and the container further comprises a 5182 aluminum alloy lid. 12. The container of claim 1 in which the spectral reflectance difference occurs at a machine-vision wavelength. 13. The container of claim 1 which the machine-readable signal comprises digital watermarking. 14. A container comprising: an aluminum alloy shell, the aluminum alloy shell comprising an outer surface and an inner surface; a first ink printed on the outer surface within a first region, the first ink printed in a 2-dimensional pattern according a digital watermark signal, the 2-dimensional pattern being machine-readable from imagery captured of a first region, in which the first ink comprises a silver color or platinum color; and in which: i) the outer surface, and ii) the first ink comprise a spectral reflectance difference at a machine-vision wavelength in a range of 12%-25%. 15. The container of claim 14 in which the 2-dimensional pattern comprises a plurality of print elements, with each print element comprising a 2×2 pixel area. 16. The container of claim 14 in which the 2-dimensional pattern comprises a plurality of print elements, with each print element comprising a 3×3 pixel area. 17. The container of claim 14 in which the 2-dimensional pattern comprises a plurality of print elements, with each print element comprising a 4×4 pixel area. 18. The container of claim 14 in which the 2-dimensional pattern comprises a plurality of print elements, with each print element comprising a 1-pixel×1-pixel diagonal. 19. The container of claim 14 in which the machine-vision wavelength comprises a wavelength in a range of 660 nm-680 nm. 20. The container of claim 14 in which the digital watermark signal comprises a sparse mark signal. 21. The container of claim 14 in which the aluminum alloy shell comprises a 3004 or 3003 aluminum alloy shell, and the container further comprises a 5182 aluminum alloy lid. 22. The container of claim 14 in which the machine-vision wavelength comprises a wavelength in a blue LED spectral range.
