A detector for detecting the removal and/or insertion of a weapon out of and/or into a holster. The detector may transmit a message each time the weapon is removed from the holster. A recording system may receive the message and determine whether or not it will begin recording the data it captures. A detector may detect the change in a magnitude of an inductance and/or an impedance of a circuit to detect insertion and removal of the weapon into and out of the holster. The holster is configured to couple to the detector to position the detector to detect insertion and removal of the weapon. An adhesive tape may couple a detector to a holster.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for detecting a presence of a weapon in a holster and an absence of the weapon in the holster, the system comprising: a detector comprising a sensor circuit, a communication circuit, a memory, and a processing circuit communicatively coupled to the sensor circuit and the memory, wherein the sensor circuit is configured to detect the presence of the weapon in the holster and the absence of the weapon in the holster, wherein the sensor circuit comprises a coil and the sensor circuit provides a current to the coil to generate an electromagnetic field, and wherein the memory stores program instructions that, when executed by the processing circuit, cause the processing circuit to perform first operations comprising: entering a calibrate mode; while in the calibrate mode: determining a base-line value associated with at least one of the presence of the weapon in the holster and the absence of the weapon in the holster; entering a field mode; and while in the field mode: detecting a first characteristic of a signal provided by the sensor circuit that indicates the presence of the weapon in the holster, wherein detecting the first characteristic comprises determining a first magnitude of at least one of an inductance and an impedance, and comparing the first magnitude to the base-line value to determine the first magnitude indicates the weapon is inserted in the holster; detecting a second characteristic of the signal provided by the sensor circuit that indicates the absence of the weapon in the holster, detecting the second characteristic comprises determining a second magnitude of the at least one of the inductance and the impedance, comparing the second magnitude to the base-line value to determine the second magnitude indicates the weapon is withdrawn from the holster, wherein the first magnitude is different than the second magnitude; and responsive to detecting the second characteristic of the signal provided by the sensor circuit, wirelessly transmitting a first notice via the communication circuit; a mount configured to position the detector with respect to the holster so that the electromagnetic field passes through a wall of the holster; and a video recording system configured to perform second operations, comprising: receiving the first notice; and using information transmitted with the first notice, initiating video recording of events of an incident. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mount further comprises: a base formed of a rigid material; and a tape including a first side and a second side, wherein the first side adheres to the base to couple the tape to the mount, the second side adheres to the holster to couple the mount to the holster. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the video recording system comprises a body camera or a vehicle camera. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor circuit further detects a physical property, and wherein the physical property includes momentum, velocity, or sound. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detector further comprises a shield that shields a conductor of the coil from electromagnetic noise and interaction with metal placed to a side of the coil rather than a forward portion of the coil. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein determining the base-line value comprises performing, via the sensor circuit, several readings of the at least one of the inductance and the impedance while the weapon is withdrawn from the holster. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detector comprises a control, the calibrate mode is entered responsive to a first signal received via the control, and the field mode is entered responsive to a second signal received via the control. 8. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first operations further comprise receiving, via the communication circuit, the identity of the user of the detector. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information transmitted with the first notice includes a status of the detector, and wherein the video recording is further initiated based on a value of the status. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second operations further comprise: receiving a second notice; and using second information transmitted with the second notice, declining to initiate a second recording based on one or more values of the second information. 13. The system of claim 1 wherein the detector further comprises an indicator and the first operations further comprise: providing a first information via the indicator in accordance with the field mode; and providing a second information via the indicator in accordance with the calibrate mode. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first operations further comprise: entering a test mode; and while in the test mode: detecting the first characteristic of the signal provided by the sensor circuit that indicates the presence of the weapon in the holster; providing a light via the indicator when the first characteristic is detected; detecting the second characteristic of the signal provided by the sensor circuit that indicates the absence of the weapon in the holster; and ceasing providing the light via the indicator when the second characteristic is detected. 15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a server, wherein the first operations further comprise receiving, via the communication circuit, updated software from the server. 16.
