The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is selected from: and or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 5. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is selected from: and or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 6. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 7. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 8. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. 9. A method for treating a disorder associated with HO-1 signaling dysfunction in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of the compound of claim 1 , wherein the disorder associated with HO-1 signaling dysfunction is a kidney disease. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the kidney disease is chronic kidney disease or acute kidney injury (AKI). 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the effective amount is a therapeutically effective amount. 12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the effective amount is a prophylactically effective amount. 13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the subject is a mammal. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the mammal is a human. 15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the subject has been diagnosed with a need for treatment of the disorder prior to the administering step. 16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the subject is at risk for developing the disorder prior to the administering step. 17. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the step of identifying a subject in need of treatment of the disorder. 18. A method for modifying HO-1 signaling in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of the compound of claim 1 , thereby modifying HO-1 signaling in the subject. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein modifying is activating.
